I usually start with narrative writing because it's easy to write about ourselves and what we do each day. In First Grade I get a lot of "I went to the park." "I went to school." SOOOOO... why not spark imagination with fun prompts like these? Encourage your students to think creatively, and put theirselves in unique positions in their minds. I love the idea of a kindness challenge to inspire our students! Post a "Shine Bright with Kindness" bulletin board for students to write about what random acts of kindness they see in their classmates! Give each student a "Kindness Tracker" with badges to cut out and give to each other when they "catch them doing something kind"... When their tracker is filled with badges they can get a paper bracelet! SO FUN! Check the link in my bio if you want to grab this product!

Get ready for Back to School with this great reading incentive! Your students color an image each night they read and return it to school for a small surprise (i.e. fun pencil) when the sheet for each month is complete. Students ALSO engage in a Heart Word Challenge! A certificate with empty badge spaces is sent home, and students complete the Heart Word Challenge each month to get a "badge" to add to their certificate! It's a LOT of fun! I've been trying to settle back into my literacy block after the busy busy of Valentine's Day and 100's day, full moon.... all that! One consistent that I notice that my students enjoy is my Word Building Activities. I have 128 Heart Words included in this bundle. Students simply read the heart word, find the letters, cut out the letters to build the words! GREAT word mapping practice! They work on the activity, then come read them to me (even as I work with another group it's a quick listen) and then share with a friend before tucking the sheet into their back pack!
