COVID-19 Outbreak Declared at Iroquois Lodge

On January 6th, 2022, Ohsweken Public Health identified a COVID-19 outbreak at the Iroquois Lodge based on multiple presumptive infections among staff members. These infections are still considered “presumptive” as staff were tested via rapid test and are awaiting results from PCR testing.

All residents were tested for COVID-19 via rapid test on January 7th, and 27 of these tests have come back positive.

Outbreak precautions have been in place at Iroquois Lodge since January 3rd. This means that all residents are to remain in their rooms, are served meals in their rooms, and group activities have been suspended. Visitors are not permitted at this time with the exception of designated caregivers.

Iroquois Lodge staff are communicating with designated family members of residents. Community members are encouraged to continue to follow public health guidelines by avoiding large gatherings and only leaving home for essential purposes.

Nineteen-year-old model Quannah Chasinghorse made history when she became the first Indigenous woman to walk for Chanel this past fashion month, in addition to walking the runways of Chloé, Savage x Fenty, Gabriela Hearst, and Prabal Gurung. But bringing visibility to the Native American community in the fashion community is just one part of her mission. She’s determined to amplify their stories. “There are always Indigenous people showing up, doing the work, and I don’t think we get enough recognition,” she says. “Our voices are constantly being pushed away because people don’t take us seriously. We’ve always been a stereotype, a mascot. We’ve always been not seen as real humans. Being a part of that change and encouraging other Indigenous youth to step up and use our voices, but also to be proud of who we are, is what motivates me. It keeps me wanting to keep doing what I’m doing.” Read her full ELLE January 2022 digital cover interview here: http://ellemag.co/NJ8AzdK
