Huge congratulations to Laura Grier! 🎉
The Indigenous Artist’s Survival Guide to Art School has been nominated for the Expozine 2023 Awards! The winners will be announced at the Expozine Gala, which will take place on November 22 at the Co-op Bar Milton-Parc.

The Indigenous Artist’s Survival Guide to Art School is an “auto-zine” created by Sahtu Délı̨nę artist and printmaker Laura Grier. The guide presents resources, poetry, lists, encouragement, and reflections from Grier’s personal experience as an academic and artist within a colonial institutional setting. This accessible zine is aimed at an Indigenous readership looking for tangible information about navigating art school, while not homogenizing Indigenous lived experience and perspectives.

Laura Grier is a Sahtu Délı̨nę First Nations artist and printmaker, born in Somba ké (Yellowknife), and based out of Alberta. Through the use of traditional print mediums, they instrumentalize the power of the handmade to reflect Indigeneity, language, relational ontologies, and lived experiences of urban displacement and inherent Dene spirituality. Laura’s work is inspired by the dynamism of Indigenous art practices and uses printmaking as a tool for resistance, refusal, and reflexivity.

Surprise! A Prairie Pop-Up! ✨💕

Our friend Shalaka Jadhav will be selling PS publications at the 2024 Praire Art Book Fair in Winnipeg this weekend! Look out for PS books and Shalaka at the Gravitron Table!

Also, don't miss the Gravitron Reader-In-Residence session with Shalaka Jadhav, Saturday, September 14, 1pm-3pm CST. The Gravitron Reader-In-Residence program has been launched in response to the death of spaces in so-called Canada that promote and disseminate artists working with publications and writing. This meandering initiative will focus on promoting writing and reading in the visual arts outside major urban centres. The reader-in-residence is invited to engage with the Gravitron collection by reading and responding to the material they find. Shalaka Jadhav is the 2024 Prairie Art Book Fair Reader-In-Residence and will join Nic Wilson for a conversation and presentation developed over the course of the residency.
