"Due to the Vatican’s aforementioned spiritual aspirations, in addition to social and media pressures, the Pope wants to contribute to resolving the Russo-Ukrainian war. For this reason, he tries to maintain good relations with both Russia and Ukraine, although I do not know whether this is possible. You can see how after Pope Francis makes a statement supportive of Ukraine, he will follow it by saying something in praise of Russian culture, Dostoyevsky, or Orthodoxy. For example, a week after the Pope kissed a Ukrainian flag sent from the town of Bucha, he invited a Russian woman to hold a cross together with a Ukrainian woman during the Via Crucis [Way of the Cross] ceremony in Rome."

"So far, often Ukrainian Catholics have unquestionably been hurt by the Vatican’s approach to the conflict."

In February 2022, it was said that the world was watching Ukraine. But what exactly were we all watching (and reading, and hearing)?
Here's your chance to examine that question and learn a whole lot more: "Contemporary Ukraine and Media Representation," a 300-level undergraduate course from CIUS and the University of Alberta - Faculty of Arts Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies will be offered in Winter Term 2025!
The course will be taught by CIUS Research Coordinator and Forum for Ukrainian Studies Editor-in-Chief Dr. Oleksandr Pankieiev. Learners will survey the history of the media landscape in Ukraine, focusing on the internal and external factors that influenced its formation, as well as on the role it played in the formation of Ukrainian identity and security of the country.

"Ukrainian Muslims are kind of like grassroots diplomats, explaining the situation in Ukraine to their co-religionists in other countries. Various diasporas among the Muslims in Ukraine are especially valuable in this, as they see the situation from the inside and report on what is happening in Ukraine through their channels to their country of origin. Various religious associations of Muslims also contribute significantly, as they try to convey the Ukrainian view of the war at more official levels."

"Even while Ukraine exercises its right to self-defense under the UN Charter, it continues to fulfill some of its key commitments in arms control. The majority of these treaties are non-binding. One might assume that it is in everybody’s best interests to follow the principles of arms control, to create a transparent and secure environment in which all nations can thrive. Unfortunately, that is not the case."

Two years into the full-scale war, there are still no international mechanisms in place to stop or even impact the aggressor.

"There is a paradigm in peace and conflict studies that says religion cannot be part of the solution when it is such a huge part of the problem and even one of the reasons for war. In such a case, first and foremost religions need to assess their own complicity in the war, their participation in the conflict’s dynamics, and ideological underpinnings.

Nevertheless, the biggest potential for religious communities to be a part of reconciliation in Ukrainian society after the war is thanks to Ukraine’s historical tradition of religious plurality and tolerance. So far, this tradition has not been destroyed by the war. It is a bit hard right now to work amidst the polarization, but this experience is still very strong in the arguments of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and in all the statements of the Orthodox churches and other churches in Ukraine. They always return to the experience of Ukraine as a country and society with a history of religious tolerance, and this is a treasure that will be invaluable for future reconciliation. "

It is very important for potential future reconciliation that people experience the church as a reliable partner in the struggle for life and for dignity.

"[I]t was very hard to see the Russian soldiers use the churches not only as shields—assuming that Ukrainian armed forces would not attack them if they organized their field hospitals or military headquarters or stored arms there—but also as places for interrogating people, torturing and even killing them. We witnessed such instances in many regions.

"Churches and religious sites play a special role for people’s resistance, resilience, and solidarity in hardship."

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014, Alisa went to the hottest spots in the Donetsk region to film Alisa in Warland. Working under artillery fire, at times she was just several hundred meters from Russian positions. Alisa was also on site at the Donetsk Prokofiev International Airport, together with its ‘cyborg’ defenders, during the fierce battles of 2014 and 2015.
In 2014 she was held in captivity by illegal, Russia-backed paramilitary units near Kramatorsk.

"There are two main trends here, which overlap. The first trend is securitization, and the second one is a drift to a more cooperationist model of church-state relations with respect to securitization. Since 2014, religion, and especially inter-Orthodox competition, has become a matter of security concern for Ukraine. Before the war, there were several academics, experts, and some politicians promoting this sort of “spiritual security” approach, but it was never a matter of urgent high political priority or comprehensive state policies."

"What does Trump’s election mean for Europe? One can make the case that the future of Ukraine matters to the United States, but it matters much more to Europe, especially to the eastern flank of the EU. For example, despite all of the historic tensions between Poland and Ukraine, Poland has now been one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters. If Russia dominates Ukraine, Russia becomes a neighbour of Poland. The same is true of Finland; they have a long border with Russia.
The problem is that if the United States aid does dry up and is still not 100% certain, Europe can only partially replace the United States as a supplier. The US provides more military aid (not economic aid) than all the European countries. Europe has to do some severe calculations on ramping up defence expenditure and boosting military industries, but it may not be able to do that in time."

The round table speakers will provide an overview and detailed analysis of critical events that have shaped the flow of the war since its start. Based on historical background, the discussion will centre on questions about international structures and their presumed preparedness to respond to Russia’s aggression, the situation on the battlefield and the military needs of Ukraine to liberate its territories, and the situation inside Russia and its socio-economic and political capacity to continue the war.

This year in February we mark ten years since the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian War and two years since the start of its full-scale invasion stage. In 2014, on 20 February Russian forces began the seizure of Ukraine’s Autonomous Republic of Crimea. That year, using hybrid warfare tactics Russia...
