Slide 1: Are you afraid to show your therapist the real YOU?

Slide 2: If you’re holding back your real thoughts, opinions, and beliefs, you’re only stifling your own healing and growth, friend.

And you 👏 deserve 👏 better!

Slide 3: A good therapist is open-minded (plus, let’s face it, we’ve heard it all). You don’t have to worry about offending them by disagreeing with them. Or oversharing and getting “too” personal.

Growth happens when we get uncomfortable, dare to push back and stand up for our right to be heard.

Slide 4: It’s not your job to win your therapist over and make them your best friend. And it’s not their job to agree with you; it’s their job to help you.

Slide 5: Want more help getting the most out of therapy? Tune in to the latest episode of Therapy Explained to hear my tips and tricks to get the most out of your therapy journey, and kick-start progress in your sessions!

Do you feel like your progress in therapy has stalled? 🙋‍♀️

Are you tempted to cancel because you freeze in your therapist's chair and are unsure what to talk about? 👀

This is SO common.

Here’s why:

Therapy is taxing on our brains 🧠 and, honestly, our brains are lazy. Your brain wants to conserve energy, but processing big emotions is draining!
You might be skipping over your therapy sesh pre-work like journaling and reflecting on your biggest struggles. 📝

But if you want to squeeze the juice out of your next therapy session, there are a few ways you can set yourself–and your brain–up for success.

Start by pulling out your notes app and tuning into this week’s episode of Therapy Explained - we’ll talk through tips and tips to help you leave your next session feeling confident and clear.

Here’s a friendly reminder from your neighborhood psychologist (👋 that’s me, Kim!):
Your therapist can’t read your mind.

As much as I wish we had crystal balls 🔮 or x-ray vision to peek inside your brain 🧠, we rely on what you share with us (along with some spidey senses, lots of notes, and years of training).
Here’s what this means for you ➡️ To get the most out of therapy, you need to do a bit of prep work (trust me, you deserve to reap the fruits of this labor).

This could involve journaling or reflecting on areas you’d like to improve. Here are some common areas of focus:
Relationships
Work/life balance
Parenting
Boundaries

If you want to support yourself or a loved one through grief, It’s important to surrender to the fact that we don’t have all the answers.

Instead, focus on asking the right QUESTIONS.

Like Brene Brown suggests...

Sometimes the best way to help someone who is grieving is to ask them what love looks like right now.

Maybe they need help getting their kids out the door.

Or maybe they need a weekly vent sesh and a listening ear.

Opening the floor for conversation is sometimes all we need to ask for help.

The bottom line? Healing can’t happen in a vacuum. We NEED to feel heard and understood to heal, but It’s hard to find the right words to express the pain we’re feeling. Or a listening ear willing to hear us without judgment.

That’s why, this week on Therapy Explained I’m peeling back the layers of grief by using one of my most difficult losses as an example to walk through Brené Brown’s 3 elements of grief.

To tune in, DM me the word “grief” and I’ll send the episode straight to your inbox.

Sometimes, acknowledging your grief is only half the battle.

The other half? Sharing your grief with a listening ear.

Not so they can respond or share their opinion, but because letting it out can help us process and heal faster and more effectively than keeping it bottled up inside.

But sharing our grief with others – be it loved ones or strangers – can feel scary.

We might not feel like we have the right words, or that our words will cause others to judge us…

…which is why I’m walking you through MY grief journey in episode 51 of Therapy Explained.

We’ll go beyond the “5 Stages of Grief” to uncover what grief REALLY looks like, from start to finish, based on Brene Brown’s 3 elements of grief.

Just DM me the word “grief” and I’ll send you the link to listen.

Have you ever let your anger get the best of you?

We’ve all been there – our brains love to trick us into thinking that if we offload our hurt onto someone else, they’ll jump into action to make us happy.

But that’s just not how it works.

Anger sparks defensiveness. 😠

Connection sparks change. 🤝

Next time you’re upset, ask yourself:

🌷Is this the right time to address this? Do I need some time to cool down first?

🌷How can I connect first and set the stage for a productive, and calm conversation?

🌷Is there something I could be misinterpreting? What if this problem could be solved by simply listening to understand?

👉👉Want to start getting things off your chest without letting your anger take the reigns? Tune in to Episode 50 of Therapy Explained for my tried-and-true tips for calmly tackling tough conversations confidently. 🎙️

Are in-person wellness retreats really worth the hype?

After all, between the time, money, and energy it takes to get there, the investment feels lofty (especially because there's an endless supply of self-help resources on the internet and on bookstore shelves)...right?

But here’s the deal: A book, blog post, or course can only help you if you have the time, energy, and support you need to apply the principles within it.

And if you’re a busy woman like me, your day-to-day just doesn't leave much room for personal-devlopment.

In-person retreats can be a great way to interrupt your normal routine so you can slow down and focus on YOU. 🌷

Most people say there are no shortcuts in the world of personal growth.

But I say you can find more confidence and joy in one week of sisterhood than you can in weeks or months suffering in the belly of the burnout beast alone.

How do I know? Because I’ve done it. I’ve invested in retreats that worked after months of wondering why the dusty self-help books on the shelf didn’t.

I experienced the power of community and ditched the idea that I had to go it alone (book in hand) to find success.

I found that what I need to be successful is coaching, guidance, and accountability along the way. That's when I make the most progress in the shortest amount of time.

For me, an upfront investment keeps me accountable and committed to my goal.

If you can relate to the hamster wheel of half-read self help books and abandoned blog posts online, maybe a retreat is what you need, too.

Questions like:

“Why am I so on edge all the time?”

or…

“Why can’t I find the willpower to cook healthy dinners instead of ordering takeout?”

Can be answered simply → Decision Fatigue

So often, we beat ourselves up for not having the willpower to just GO or DO. But really, your tired brain is just forced to make too many choices. It’s no surprise when it runs out of gas.

In primitive times, we weren’t worried about when or how or what to do things. Humans reserved mental energy for emergencies. But now, our energy is scattered all over the place.

Give yourself a break, friend.

If you ever find yourself zoning out on TV or doom-scrolling on Instagram, that might be your brain’s way of saying, 'Give me a break!'

Before you beat yourself up for numbing or being ‘unproductive,’ understand this: your brain is just tired.

Our brains have a decision making limit before it starts rebelling, making us choose the easy or less desirable options. It's kinda like when our muscles are overused and need rest.

Our brains, though only 2% of our body weight, use up about 20% of our energy. No wonder we're all exhausted!

So, what can we do? Prioritizing good sleep and tackling the big stuff first thing in the morning can make a huge difference.

Want more tips for supporting your tired brain so you can make decisions that feel good to you more often? Tune in to this week’s episode of Therapy Explained!
