Dublin’s ABC

Dublin’s ABC (94 FM) was started by Paul Barrett and first began broadcasting on 25th September (4pm), 1995 using a low powered transmitter and with pre-recorded programmes on 94.2 and 88 FM.At first 88 FM was the main frequency and 94.2 FM was the link ,we changed this when we moved to the office's as 94.2 got out better to the city and county. The station operated from an office block in Dublin’s city centre (from my home first) and it wasn’t long before live programmes were introduced and the station’s transmitter power was increased (CTE 250 watts). Eventually we shut down our 88 FM frequency and moved our main transmitter to 94.3 FM (due to BBC radio Wales on 94.2 fm ).

ABC's format was mainly to play pop music with a high content of oldies "Memories from the 60's to the 90's" which very few other stations were doing. We also broadcast other types of music in the evenings, including rock, reggae, jazz, traditional and Irish music, dance, indie and classical to name but a few.

We also did a number of outside broadcasts including our 1st Birthday Party which was broadcast from The Temple Bar on Dorset Street (two holidays given away) also Rumour’s Night Club in Dublin 2nd Birthday. We were astonished at the number of people that turned up on the nights. We also did many other O.B.s including several months of Friday Night Live from The Fleet Bar in Fleet Street. As well as this we also had roving reporters at the St.Patrick’s Day Parade and in various shopping centre’s in the run up to Christmas.

Over the years we extended our broadcasting hours and at one point had live programming from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. 7 days a week. On Sundays our programmes were relayed on shortwave and we received reception reports from the U.K. / Spain / France and as far away as Germany.
