Struggling to find time for exercise? You’re not alone! We get it – life gets busy, and our daily workout often gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. But what if we told you that just 4 minutes a day could make a huge difference for your health?

If you’re frequently drinking sugary beverages, new research may have you thinking twice.

Recent global research, co-led by University of Galway and McMaster University Canada, has found a surprising link between the frequent consumption of fizzy drinks, fruit juice, and even coffee with an increased risk of stroke. The findings come from two studies published as part of the INTERSTROKE project, one of the largest international studies on stroke risk factors.

The research suggests that regular consumption of sugary or artificially sweetened fizzy drinks and fruit juices could elevate the risk of stroke, particularly the type caused by bleeding in the brain. According to the study, fizzy drinks, whether sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened, were linked to a 22% increased risk of stroke, with the risk escalating sharply when two or more of these drinks were consumed daily.

Similarly, fruit juice drinks—often marketed as healthy but made from concentrates with added sugars and preservatives—were associated with a 37% increase in the risk of intracranial haemorrhage (stroke caused by bleeding). The risk tripled with the consumption of two or more fruit drinks daily. Women, in particular, showed a heightened risk of stroke from fruit juices.

In contrast, the study also found that drinking more than seven cups of water a day was associated with a reduced risk of stroke caused by clots.

As part of the same research, the effects of coffee and tea were also explored. Interestingly, drinking more than four cups of coffee a day was linked to a 37% increased risk of stroke, while lower coffee consumption did not show the same risk. On the other hand, drinking tea had a protective effect, with regular tea drinkers (3-4 cups per day) seeing an 18-20% lower chance of stroke. Black tea, including popular varieties like Breakfast and Earl Grey, was particularly beneficial, showing a 29% reduced stroke risk, while green tea also provided a 27% reduction.

However, the benefits of tea were significantly reduced for those who added milk, which may block the positive effects of antioxidants in tea.

So...the gym sure was busy today.

We absolutely LOVE seeing the gals gettin’ it at the gym, it warms our hearts. But our patience was also tested having to wait for racks and weights.

As everyone gets the same idea to freshen up their workouts and reinvigorate their fitness motivation, it’s inspired us to revisit our at-home workout routines just in case we simply cannot bear the crowds that the new year is sure to bring.

With that in mind, here’s a 30-minute at-home workout that will challenge your strength, endurance, and agility. It includes a dynamic warm-up, a high-intensity circuit, and a cool-down.

🏃‍♀️Warm-Up (1 min each)

Jump Rope (or air jumps)
Lunges with a twist
Arm circles
High knees
Inchworms

🏋️‍♀️ Workout:

Perform each exercise for 50 seconds, followed by 10 seconds rest. Complete the circuit 4 times.

Jump Squats
Decline Push-ups
Burpees
Pistol Squats (Assisted if necessary)
Glute Bridge

🧘‍♀️ Cool-Down (1 min each):

Downward Dog
Hamstring stretch
Cobra stretch
Triceps stretch
