It will take me months, or maybe years, to properly articulate what Bearly’s means to me.  And people keep saying it’s not dead, it’s just reincarnated, but c’mon. Another local staple is gone.  In a city this old, with this much history, it’s honestly less sad than it is infuriating. But that’s for another time, I suppose.

The bar, the stage, the walls, the staff, the friends, the food, the endless pints of $4 draught, the smoke breaks, the bathroom graffiti, the mice, the mice, the mice! I was lucky. Rebecca Falvey is my dear friend. Her family was an import part of that place, and when she and I moved home from Montreal 10 years ago, she quickly took a job there. She met her future husband there. Al Forbes, of Ordeals and Hobtown fame. A man I am proud to call a friend and partner in crime. (Sorry for all those times I walked out on my bill, bud. I was young and dumb)  

Bearly’s taught me plenty about the music scene here. It played a huge part in starting Big Turnip Records. It taught me a lot about booking. It taught me a lot about drinking. It taught me a lot about atmosphere. I even worked the door on and off over those 10 years. Cash at the end of the night, and a tip out. Not bad.  4am, locked in with the curtains drawn, smoking at the bar, taking it all for granted. Long Live Garrett Mason’s Peace & Love Festival. Long live Them Other Johns. Long with Keith Hallett & The Hookers. Long live Morgan Davis. Long live my friends who are taking this much harder than I am. Long live the secrets. “Two Schooners.” “Take care, please.” Hughie. The p**s hole. Sneaking in on busy nights through the side door.  Xoxoxoxoxox.

And by the way: It’s pronounced “Bear-leys” Not “Beer-leys”. How hard is that?

PSA: 2024 is already half over. Big Turnip Records has been busy putting on shows, managing tours, networking inside and outside of The Maritimes, and making moves for bigger and better projects. Over the next few months, we will be dropping singles from some amazing acts, and on top of that, gearing up for Dartmouth's favourite new festival NOWADAYS, which will run from Oct 10--13th All that being said, it's time to scale back and prioritize the things that are working and dispense with the things that aren't. It has been amazing over these last few years seeing how far this thing has spread, but right now, it is a time to dial it back and focus. As I know from talking endlessly with artists, managers, organizers, and creatives of all kinds, spreading ourselves thin is a sure-fire way to crash and burn. Let's all take a step back this summer and figure out why we do what we do, how we can be the best, and most competent versions of ourselves.
