Room tone - what is it? Why record it? How to do it?
At the end of an interview, we record room tone. It’s a bit of an odd thing to do and is always a bit weird. Once the interview is done, everyone stays in place and we point the camera to the mic and record about one minute of audio called room tone. Think of it like adding cooking stock to a soup. With all the cuts of an edit, things can sound different in the audio and dropping a baseline background track of what the room sounds like makes everything smooth. One of the hard things is not making any noise for one minute as everyone looks about awkwardly but it can be a lifesaver in post. Rooms sound different when people are in it so even having the interviewee not in the space (if they had to leave) can change the tone or sound of a space. It’s a small picky audio element to but is another tool to have in your pocket. See the comments for a great video supercut that was done on this :)

A little BTS (behind the screens vs scenes). An . This tool is a great addition for editing and general computer use. It’s like a tactile customizable shortcut interface. It very useful for streaming too. Many streamers have them for reactions and chat interfaces and layered keyboard commands. But for me when editing, this tools with a series of visual shortcuts makes things easy. Yes, keyboard shortcuts do a similar thing but this is just fast and fun.

“The biggest light source in the solar system” - You (or maybe just me) hear cinematographers and photographers extoll natural light and I do love it too. It can be frought with challenges as well. Too bright, too cloudy, too much exposure changes with clouds passing by and more. My thought is that we as humans see each other and much of the world in natural light so we are wired to like it better. There is a place for lighting effects and in some scenes, to match the lights of the room but I always try to stick to daylight colours with interviews when possible. In a perfect world you get to control all of the light but in so many of the corporate interviews I have done, you make the best of the setting you are provided and “office lighting” - which is rarely flattering also often has a variety of mixed bulbs and creates chaos for those who care about it. So when the opportunity is there you can make simple decisions to leverage the sun, like we did on this day. A slight knock down of the bright winder with the built in blinds plus a bit of fill with our own key light (set to daylight of course). Just a bit of insight to one of the 100s of tiny decisions you make on the day to create a great shot.

Invest in lenses first! Cameras update and sensors continually get better but lenses can last decades. Now I love new gear but hate obsolence of equipment for tiny end of life things. So after exhaustive internet scrolling and detailed exploded spec diagrams I replaced this 4mm broken screw collar to keep this lens going. Thx to

Kicking off the new year w colour. False colour that is. This setting on video production monitors is a favourite of mine to use when shooting for years. It gives a colour spectrum representation of exposure that you can quickly identify how to light a scene. Each monitor brand has some difference in representation so you have to be aware of that and many cameras also have this as a toggle setting. But it does not show up in the video itself. So don’t be surprised if you see your camera operator or DP flicking this on, it’s not a new social media filter :) just another of the many tools to use to make things look great.

Adapt, adapt and again. Often we don’t get the chance for a tech survey (a prep/scout day to plan shots and know what gear we will need) so we have become very good at quickly analyzing a scenario to our advantage. In this tight space there was not much room for a main light so we filtered the natural light from the small kitchen window to be our key light and it worked great for the scenario. Luckly the sky was a bit overcast and pushed a lovely ambient light to cast onto our interviewee. Sometimes you have to make quick creative decisions that work for the space and the time. 2024 we have jumped right back at ‘er.
