Dalmeny Citizen For Change

Dalmeny Citizen For Change The Dalmeny Citizens for Change was created to help you, the citizens of Dalmeny communicate clearly together and with our leaders on town council.

Transparency and communication are vital to growing our small community and modern tools such as facebook provide a means of doing this. It is our vision that you as a citizen would use this group to bring ideas or questions to everyone and that the membership of the group could comment, in response. It is also our hope that members of the town council will be members of the group and read these r

esponses allowing them to be informed of current issues, problems and ideas that the community has. It is also our vision that this tool can be an instrument for the town council to post meeting minutes or throw challenging questions back to the membership for opinion. We beleive that Dalmeny is filled with bright minds and talented individuals from the entire age spectrum. Leveraging this is essential for good decision making and allowing the peoples voice to be heard. You the people and citizens of Dalmeny can take charge over direction and support the elected individuals that administer the town through your input and valuable insight. What this tool in facebook is NOT meant to be is a means of complaint or ridicual. Each posting should refelct a concern and an idea for overcoming that concern. We must be productive and proactive to create positive change. Negative postings are likely, but please make every effort to follow your concern with a positive suggestion. If we all use this tool as this vision has outlayed, Dalmeny will grow and the people we elected will be supported in a positive way.

You know how the little things can often times create a raw spot for people. i think we all know that from our personal lives. I have a real beef that i beleive needs some transparency from the rink and the town. For years we have asked that the heaters be turned on during games so we can enjoy the game outside where we can bolster and support the kids playing and our senior team the Fury. Now we see a sign saying they don't work. It is a sturggle to accept this as fact since we have rarely seen them ever on and to get them on in the first place was like pulling teeth.

So that is my beef, this is my solution. Place a timer on the heater system that can be programmed for the upcoming game schedule. Then the rink employees don't have to worry about turning them off and on. We get heaters in almost every other rink in the league and we apparently have a newer facility, so lets manage the costs and start healing that raw spot. I am quite sure that many people have stopped attending fury games because they are tired of freezing during the games.

Lastly, if it is so expensive to operate than please provide the users that built this facility a little over 10 years ago with a monthly cost. I am quite sure many of us might toss in a twenty spot each to cover the monthly operational costs so we don't have to freeze.....at least if that is the real reason they are not on.

Transparency and openess, let's see some answers.

thanks! Darren

Ok , I'll start us off. I noticed on the town of Dalmeny web site that the agenda for last Monday's council meeting was posted in advance of the meeting. I'm not sure what protocol is but I do know I have looked for agendas for previous council meetings on the web site and couldn't find any . So kudos to the town administration and staff for getting the agenda on the site in advance to last Monday's meeting. I feel citizens need to know what is being discussed by council with as much notice as possible. Thumbs up.
Something else I feel is essential is a better account of the council meetings minutes . From the way the minutes are recorded right now , there is no way to know how councillors voted, felt, or what they said about each item. Citizens need to have this info to be able to make informed decisions when it comes time to vote in future civic elections .
I understand Jon Kroeker is posting on his Twitter account what happens in council. Good on ya Jon for taking the time to do that .

I have an idea about improving transparency and allowing citizens to have access to what goes on in town council meetings/ hearings, without adding cost or work for town admin staff.

I have a relatively inexpensive voice recorder that records directly to a Usb stick. It can record in a number of digital formats and is easy to use.
The idea would be to use this kind of recorder and post recorded MP3 files of every council meeting and hearing on the town web site. The files do not take up much room. They would be easy to put on the site and label. Anyone could listen to them.
Nothing would change for the councillors or administration accept the extra 30 seconds it would take to move the files off the USB stick onto the web site and label it.
The info from the meetings that currently make it to the web site could still be added as is -as the topic headings for the recordings .Cuz let's face it , that's all they really are, topic headings.

That's my beef and a possible solution. Let me know what you think.

Now it's your turn. What's your beef and how would you make it better.

Great to see this vehicle started, now lets throw some ideas against the wall. Growing a community is not unlike growing a business, the more you leverge each person's talents in a business, the more dynamic and exciting each day will be. It fosters creativity and with a smart sales formula, growth of that business occurs. What if this model or idea were applied to a town. If everyone in the community has a talent or a skill, a profession or a passion and the town could leverage this when needed, what is possible? Let's say the town decided to consider a hotel/motel. This project would have naysayers and proponents, but if a talent pool could be pooled together that brought a sampling of experience and discipline to debate, consider and ultimately draft a resolution, would this not be a valuable asset assisting the town council in arriving at the best final decision possible for stakholders in the community? your thoguhts….
