Had a killer time on last night's session, playing bass on four songs for a record I'm producing (Greg Bungay). These were the chosen tools from among the six basses in the studio! The vintage modified Squier PJ bass has EMG Geezer Butler pickups, and they are great.

🚨NEW RELEASE🚨

Here's the new video from alt-rockers Hit the Coast!

The song is "Retracing", and it was produced by Wintersleep's Loel Campbell (who also drummed on it) and engineered by Jon Matthews here at the 'Mill. Mixed by Matt Snell and mastered by Christian Montano.

This release is part of Music PEI's very cool Golden Ticket Program, in which new artists are guided through the complete process of recording, releasing and promoting a single. It's always an honour to help mentor new artists in collaboration with Music PEI.

The "snakey" video is directed and animated by Luca Bisceglia, with camera and editing from Oakar Myint, assisted by Bailey Dockendorff.

Hit The Coast is Curtis Klein, Bruce Rooney and Evan McCosham.

Play it loud!

Well, Music PEI Week 2024 is well underway, with numerous terrific shows over the next 3 days, culminating in the 2024 Music PEI Awards Gala - Presented by Atlantic Lottery open to the public on Sunday night, celebrating our province's collective musical achievements.

I am quite honoured to once again be nominated for the Recording Sector Award (this replaces studio and producer of the year) for my work over the past 18 months!

Thanks to the MANY wonderful folks I've had the privilege of collaborating with in this time: 𝗚𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗡, Nolan Compton Music, Keira Loane Music, John MacAllar Singer-Songwriter, Heather, Defuser, Thatcher MacKay Music, Scott MacKay, Dave Sampson, Bluestreak PEI, Emi Claire, Meyer Cookware, Netflix's "Spirit Rangers", Music PEI and many more.

I am truly thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with our uber-talented Island musicians, and to be able to carve out a living doing what I love.

Good luck to all of this year's nominees, and I'll see you ALL on Sunday!

A HOT buy for any of my pals doing some home recording, setting up a recording workstation (DAW), or fellow pro producers and engineers:

I don't think there has ever been a better plug-in deal than IK Multimedia's MixBox on sale at audioplugin.deals for $29.99US.

MixBox is a “500-series”-style virtual rack plug-in that lets you create, compare and save your own custom channel strips or multiFX chains.

With MixBox, you have access to over 70 quality effects from T-RackS, AmpliTube and SampleTank in one rack, including all the studio mixing staples you could ever want: 1176, LA2A, Fairchild, Pultec, console channels, EQ, guitar amp sims, saturation, reverb, delay...it's all here, and it's all (mostly) very good!

I don't think you could spend 30 bucks any better. I use it all the time. Check it out!

Happy Monday, 'Mill pals! Jon here.

In case you haven't had the opportunity to check it out yet, I thought I'd share this recent single I produced for the terrific new singer-songwriter Keira Loane Music! For this one, I had the opportunity to play "one man band", playing drums, bass, electric guitars and mandolins, which is always fun to do.

The song is a reminder that sometimes you should probably "untack your high horse" if you're getting "too big for your britches". Say no more, say no more. ;)

I think Keira's really going places. Watch for her tributes to Carrie Underwood and Zach Bryan as well as her original material shows with her excellent band!

The good times keep rolling this weekend, with the delightful lads of 𝗚𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗡 back in the studio, tracking for their full length debut album!

Looks like we'll have bed tracks (the basic instruments) down for SIX more songs after these 2 days. These guys are prepared, enthusiastic and talented - a winning combination. A joy to produce.

Full band bed tracking in the isolated rooms at the 'Mill with Hit the Coast and Loel Campbell of Wintersleep / Billy Talent!

We were able to wrap the song including vocals in 2 productive days, part of Music PEI's Golden Ticket program. Much fun was had!

Happy 2024, everyone!

Having just returned from a trip of a lifetime to Nashville, Tennessee, I'm back in the swing of things with some work for Music PEI's Golden Ticket program!

In the studio today is the terrific rock band Hit the Coast with special guest drummer and producer Loel Campbell of Wintersleep, and he brought a Nirvana-sized kit!

Awesome first day, with drums, bass, and main guitars all in the can. Back at it Thursday.
