I studied with many teachers over many years and never learned how to do a proper onset. An onset is the action off connecting the vocal chords to the breath properly. I had to find out how to do it on my own. It’s so simple, natural, and so important. Even a baby can do it!

My last post was a diagram of the singing table and five steps. The first step is proper breathing and support. This step is the foundation of singing. Once you have a firm grasp of step one you’re on your way to great vocal technique.

The Old School Teaching Method has produced many great singers, there’s no arguing with that. I believe it leaves a lot of singers behind. I believe I can help those left behind. I’m confident that I can fill in the gaps in the Old School Method.

Another positive thing that happened when I started singing on the breath was I started speaking on the breath. Being soft spoken by nature my vocal chords would leak air when I spoke and the sound would get trapped in my throat. This would cause my voice to tire quickly. This doesn’t happen now.

When I discovered what it feels like to sing on the breath properly, it was a ”wow” moment. The voice felt very free. There was a lightness and ease in producing sound. It felt like the sound was riding on a cushion of air. It felt like the resonance had lifted up and forward and out of my throat. The sound didn’t seem big to me because it was projecting. It was the first time that I used the right muscles to sing. Lastly, and importantly, I know how to reproduce these sensations.

Learning to sing is difficult because it is counterintuitive. We think we have to work harder physically than we have to. When you are singing on the breath properly it feels effortless.
