I'm looking forward to Literary Kaleidoscope's SPRING READINGS 2024 on Wednesday, April 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marda Loop Community Association where author Sharon Butala will be interviewing author Claire Keegan about her book "Small Things Like These", shortlisted in 2022 for the Booker and Rathbone Folio Prizes and awarded the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction.

Keegan's short but by no means small tale is about an ordinary man haunted as much by his ghosts as by his desire to do the right thing was. A story both intensely particular and powerfully universal, told with exquisite precision, "Small Things Like These" reminds us that individual acts can challenge oppressive social institutions.

Marda Loop Community Association Hall.
3130 16 Street S.W.
Doors open at 9 for coffee, cookies, and conversation. Presentations begin at 9.30am (with the exception of Wednesday May 15 --start time 9am). Admission $15 at door.

Hope to see you there!

Our stories are how we build connection.

Human beings have used story to build relationships, share knowledge and entertain others since we first gathered around fires in the long-ago days of cavemen.

Capturing our own stories and preserving them becomes more important as we get older. They're a gift to the generations behind us. Our untold stories may be forgotten, a lost legacy.

Please connect with me if you would like to know more about preserving your own legacy, or the legacy of a parent or grandparent.

Episode 3

🤗 In the Season of Giving this interview with Alice Lam who gives so much is an important one.

👑 Featured in Avenue’s December issue as the ‘Connection Queen’.

👏 Recipient of a 2020 Faces of Community award.
In the Avenue feature, Alice talks about creating Vollyapp, ‘People don’t have the time to do research to find a volunteer opportunity. I do the research for them.’

👛 She is also one of the founders of the Tigerstedt Flea Pop Up Market, on one of the only unchanged commercial blocks here and home to my favourite cafe, Sought & Found.
I live in the inner city SW, surrounded by cafes. I often travel to get coffee at Sought & Found. The coffee is the best, but I also feel taken care of there and my shoulders drop about two inches.

🍐 🍓 She is also one of the people behind the Community Fridge on the Tigerstedt block — a volunteer run pantry, fridge and freezer. Donations can be dropped off or people can help themselves (24/7).

COVID Chronicles Episode 9
Rick Andison, Project Director — Buildings Group, Stuart Olson Inc.
Stuart Olson, founded in 1911, $1billion+ Alberta-based organization serving Canadian construction and industrial services market. Recognized as one of Alberta’s Top 75 Employers in 2020.
As a long time leader in the construction industry, Rick shares his thoughts on how to navigate these times when you're in a leadership position and what he has observed working in the construction industry, which is often an accurate barometer of what's happening in the local economy:
Episode Notes:
Advice to other business leaders is to surround yourself with a really good circle of influence, trusted advisors, people who will listen and verify your actions
Use that circle of advisors to tap into checks and balances
COVID did not have a big impact on the company as they were considered an essential service
Safety has always been at the forefront of what they do on a daily basis
If we dial it back to the most simple statement of what we get paid to do on a daily basis is look after people on projects
The more people he talks to — owners, government, designers, trades — everyone is starting to look ahead with more optimism
Lots of activity across Calgary and the Province in the way of maintenance types of projects
From a landlord perspective, what are the assets I hold and what will that look like tomorrow; how do I service my tenants,

3 keys to successful communication:

1. Clarity -- avoid jargon, complicate language. Keep it simple, clear and concise.
2. Purpose -- be crystal clear about the Why in your communication.
3. Persistence -- it's a noisy world out there. People need to hear your message several times. Use different mediums to share your message.
