Sarah Kirkpatrick opened the interior decorating and staging service Unshelf Boutique out of her love for upcycling decor.

Whether that’s reusing cherished pieces in a new way or completely flipping décor found at a garage sale or thrift shop, Kirkpatrick has a keen eye for finding uses for items she finds.

Now, Kirkpatrick has added a décor consignment boutique to Unshelf’s list of services and she also hosts workshops to teach people ways they can style and decorate their home. From a Thrift Shopping Field Trip Workshop to a Make Your Bed Workshop to an Office Styling Workshop, there’s something for everyone coming up this year.

We caught up with Kirkpatrick to learn more about Unshelf and its upcoming workshop on June 22.

For one night only, the widely acclaimed production of New Blood is coming to life in a new way as the Calgary Civic Symphony will perform the music of Peter Gabriel live.

The show is inspired by the story of Chief Vincent Yellow Old Woman, a man who suffered in residential schools, reclaimed his life, and became chief of his people. Since 2014, the show has travelled across Alberta and other western provinces.

However, one audience will get to experience the show with a live orchestra as it takes the stage of the Jack Singer Concert Hall on June 15. We caught up with the director of the show, Deanne Bertsch, to learn more about New Blood and its collaboration with the Calgary Civic Symphony.

A new report shows that more than half of Albertans have observed sexual harassment in the workplace, but only one in 10 reported the incident.

Workers' Resource Centre is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that helps Albertans navigate their workplace rights when it comes to injury, human rights, disability insurance, and more.

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100068608555117

The centre does this through a casework program that assists workers facing difficulties and through public legal education workshops that ensure workers know their rights.

Carolyn Krahn, executive director of the Workers’ Resource Centre, says their existing programming found gaps between sexual harassment happening in the workplace and what was being done about it.

Planting the perfect garden that is beautiful, water-efficient, and able to survive Calgary’s climate can be challenging.

However, the YardSmart program, a partnership between the City of Calgary and the Calgary Horticultural Society, is the perfect solution to learn and grow a garden for your home.

The program’s purpose is to help Calgarians create a garden that is suited to the environment, keeps water on the property, and requires little maintenance.

Kath Smyth is a horticulturist at the Calgary Horticultural Society. She says the program helps create gardens that are both beautiful and beneficial to the environment.

“What we're trying to do is keep the moisture on your property so the water is not running off into the street and not putting out a lot of pollutants,” Smyth says. “What we plant is for our surrounding environment and for the wildlife and pollinators.”

Greenbriar Market + Refillery Inc. founders Mathew Beaudoin and Shawn Kearns were inspired to open their store during the pandemic when the world was thrown into chaos.

With a passion for sustainability and reducing their environmental impact, they launched an online store in 2021 and then opened a physical market and refillery in northwest Calgary last June where they offer a full-service refillery service where customers can bring their own containers and have them filled with non-toxic and sustainable products.

We spoke with Shawn Kearns, co-founder of Greenbriar Market + Refillery, about how the store is faring.

“Aging is more.”

That’s the theme of this year’s Seniors’ Week across Alberta from June 5 to 11, which reminds people that misconceptions about aging and age-related diseases still exist.

Barb Ferguson, executive director at Alzheimer Society of Calgary says age is one of the biggest risk factors for developing dementia, which is important to Calgary’s fastest-growing age group—seniors.

Ferguson says it’s vital that people take time to educate themselves on dementia and break away from the misconceptions that surround it.

“We often associate it with memory loss,” Ferguson says. “It’s really beyond that, it’s when people can’t function day to day.”

A decade ago, her heart cracked open. These are the remnants.

“I wonder how it feels to be the main course instead of the toothpick and peppermint at the door on the way out,” muses Jamie Louise Madigan in her poem “Peppermint.”

The words the 30-year-old Calgary author shares make her feel naked and vulnerable, remembering a time when things were highly emotional after going through a tumultuous breakup from an abusive relationship when she was 18.

But it’s those hardships that make up the words to Madigan’s first book, a collection of poetry titled Lipstick Stains and Coffee Cups, released earlier this year.

A young Calgarian organized a friend meetup that brought over 100 people looking to make new friends.

Lauren Rutherglen is in her mid-20s and moved to Calgary about a year and a half ago.

She’s enjoyed exploring the city and attending events, but finding a friend group to do it with was a challenge.

This prompted her to take to TikTok and organize an afternoon in Prince’s Island Park on May 21 where young Calgarians could gather and meet each other.

Southcentre Mall’s rooftop has been transformed into a garden.

The rooftop garden will support local charity Made by Momma — a non-profit organization that assists families in crisis.

It will be installed and overseen by urban agricultural experts at MicroHabitat.

It’s estimated that the rooftop garden will yield 1,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables, and herbs over the course of summer to provide Made by Momma with fresh produce.

Familiar but different. Village Brewery has undergone a transformation to bring its taproom a new design that provides a spot to gather and commune over a beer. With the transformation, Village hopes to offer customers a comfortable and welcoming space to enjoy events, concerts, and more. On top of this renovation, Village will open an additional transformable event space above the taproom later this spring.
