EDITORIAL FOR REMEMBRANCE DAY

WE OWE IT TO THEM
By Jon Vickers Marshall
Publisher South Grenville Beacon

On Monday November 11th if you can, visit your local Cenotaph, attend a Remembrance Day Service, or visit a local Royal Canadian Legion to honour our past veterans and current ones.

We owe them that, if not more. Without their selfless sacrifice in WW1, WW2, Korea, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and other peace keeping mission through the decades, we would not live in this wonderful Country.

In South Grenville, South Dundas and Brockville and area communities in Leeds-Grenville many families share in the family history of lost loved ones over the last 100+ years due to war and conflict. Rural and farming families sent husbands, sons, uncles, cousins who lost their lives defending democracy and way of life.
Look at the names on the cenotaph and see how young they were, and for our area at the time, the heavy casualty loss in comparison to the population of the time and think about families receiving the “dreaded telegram”.

“The Beacon” since we started publishing in 2021 every year, print the names on the Cenotaph in South Grenville area communities and including Iroquois in our Remembrance Day section. We need to show our children, grandchildren sacrifice and a personal family history connection. We cannot forget their ultimate sacrifice and know they are never forgotten.

As publisher I think we are the only community newspaper in Eastern Ontario that does this and will continue to do so as long as I am owner and publisher of this newspaper.

Buy a poppy, thank a veteran if you can, go to a Remembrance Day service, visit or even join a legion, watch the National service on television but most of all “Lest We Forget…”

HOLIDAY TRAIN COMING SOON!!!

Save The Date – CPKC Holiday Train is coming through the Village!
The CPKC Holiday Train is returning to Merrickville on Thursday, November 28, 2024, to celebrate its 26th season of visiting communities across the CPKC network and helping those in
need.

Thanks to the generous support of great communities like yours, the Holiday Train has raised over $24.3 million and over 5.3 million pounds of food since 1999 to help people struggling with
food insecurity. With your help, we can continue to raise food, money and awareness for people facing hunger issues across North America.

The brightly lit train will stop at the East Broadway and County Road 2 tracks spreading Christmas cheer and FREE live entertainment.

This year we will be entertained by the talented
Tyler Shaw and Shawnee Kish the CPKC Holiday Train collections will assist the RCHS Food Cupboard program – Merrickville
site, House of Lazarus in Mountain, and South Grenville Food Bank (covering Townships of Augusta, Edwardsburg – Cardinal and the Town of Prescott) meet the ever-increasing demands
of food insecurity in our communities
We would like to extend a special thank you to everyone
for their continued support to their local food banks. Food banks continue struggling to keep up with the changing needs and demand of our services in our communities.

Please help us spread the word the CPKC Holiday Train and all its wonder is coming back to the village by following the train on social media, invite your friends and family to the evening
and spread the message about the importance of heart-healthy donations by using .

Follow social media to inform and invite community members to the event and encourage food bank donations.

Supporters can follow us on CPKC Holiday Train on
Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and share our message by using and
.

Thank you to those who are contributing to planning this event. The hard work and dedication ensure that all attending will have a safe and successful night!

For more information, please visit www.cpkcr.com. If you would like to volunteer to help with this exciting event, please contact Joanne Franey – Community Health Worker at 613-269-3400

Hope to see you there!

With the season of Fall Food Drives upon us, we do hear people ask from time to time what items are specifically needed and we are always grateful for the donations that we receive.
