Autumn. Winter. Spring. Summer. Just like that, another summer is over, and with it, my reading of Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet.

I had been anticipating the release of Summer for the longest time and when I finally had it in my hands, I delayed reading it until the very last moments of summer 2021 (a whole year after its publication!) — I really didn’t want the whole experience to end.

Summer opens with the character of a teenage girl, Sacha, who in her household, her own microcosm, experiences a world’s indifference. Indifference to climate change, to social issues, and to the pandemic. If you’re into it, Smith also uses her characters to comment on British politics (I must admit, though I find it interesting, I do not understand much about it).

What I loved about Summer is that it really felt like the culmination of the entire quartet. Art is once again interweaved. Characters from her other novels in the quartet are brought in and here have aged a couple of years or so. With constant but timely shifts from past to present, Smith also opens up a window to days gone by: years involving war and trauma, contrasted with the current “war“ against COVID-19 (though I don’t exactly like comparing the pandemic to a war, but I won’t go into that now).

Lockdown is lonely, human communication falters, and yet, Ali Smith gives her characters their own way of coming together. I have to resign to the fact that I cannot do these works justice, and I cannot explain what this quartet has meant to me. But I will say that Smith’s works have continued to show me that she is a true contemporary, and I am sure they will remain fitting for a very, very long time.

“Someone I Used to Know” - Paige Toon

💛 SYNOPSIS - George is the brooding foster brother Leah never asked for and Theo is the privileged boy they meet one summer in the past and form a bit of a love triangle. Today, things are much different, with Theo out of the picture, and George returning to where it all began with unfinished business.

💛 REVIEW - I was craving an easy breezy romance book, so I picked this one up. I love dual timelines and teenage angst. In this book, we alternate between past and present, to see what happened between Theo, Leah, and George, to get to where they are today.

There’s just something about old loves returning that always get me. I love that teenage heartbreak and second chance romance. Here 👏 for 👏 it 👏 It’s always fun reading it in a book thinking of how you were as a kid and now as an adult like, “god, what a drama queen I was.” I found myself enjoying the “present” storyline much more than the past, wondering what was ultimately going to become of the relationships.

This book did have some “heavier” romance content, as George was a foster kid and Leah’s family fostered many children. For me, this was more of an eh, this is not what I’m looking for at the moment, and I wanted more love and passion scenes, but I think that it definitely contributed to the entire story. It was more of me just wanted some sap because this is my current mood.

Overall, I think it was a solid romance, and the writing was excellent. I would absolutely read more from Paige Toon and her covers are adorable!

💛 VERDICT - 4 STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🎵 Song Rec - “I Still Remember” - Bloc Party

Also, turning aj tagged me in the match your eyes to your book challenge - my eyes are hazel so I chose a green book. I FULLY did my eye makeup in green and yellow but you can’t see it and it makes me sad 🤣

Signed copies 🖊

My collection of signed copies really is my pride and joy. These are some of my favourites in my collection although I think my signed Phoebe Waller-Bridge is my favourite (she’s one of my heroes!).

Do you collect signed copies?

No Monday blues for this bookstagrammer! 🦋

I finally got “The Friend Zone” by Abby Jimenez delivered to me yesterday.

I ordered it from Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks ago because I couldn’t find a copy in stores anywhere!

It sounds so good but seems to cover a heavy topic so I’m sure I will shed a few tears over this book!

Have you read this book?
Thoughts? 🦋

Happy Monday.

***October TBR?***
Morning guys, we made it to Friday again and here is a selection of spooky / unsettling reads from my shelves which I will probably (possibly/maybe not) choose from this month.

I'm terrible at keeping to a TBR in general, but I do think reading some of the more unsettling books this month would be fun.

After taking this photo, I found The Chalk Man by C J Tudor so I read that instead of Annie Thorne 🤷‍♀️ told you I was rubbish 😂.

I think Rosamund Lupton is more autumnal than spooky, but I do want to read some more of her backlist, so that's on the pile too.

Any on here you think I should read next? The struggle is real when choosing a book.
