Glowforge hires a general counsel - because they're gonna get sued lmao

“I’m excited to be joining such an innovative and transformative company as Glowforge,” said Lutes

"Glowforge has a vision to create a world where anyone can print anything,” said Glowforge founder and CEO, Dan Shapiro. “This is a big vision that has led us to rapid growth and allowed us to develop a large and enthusiastic customer base, but there is a lot of work ahead to make that vision a reality."

Yeah - it starts with not lying to your customers, and possibly not selling them pieces of s**t that catch fire or are built haphazardly.

If you aren't using it already, maybe you should. Unless you're lucky, or indoors... No reason you shouldn't do the minimum to protect your investments.

With fall/winter basically here – you might as well prepare, if you haven’t already. There are two schools of thought when it comes to the type of liquid you put into your chiller/laser. I’m of the mind that has sense.

All too often, we tend to forget that we too, were newbs once.

When starting a new hobby, we may find ourselves asking "basic" questions. To a newbie, these basics, the "fundamentals" if you will, are crucial and critical to their learning. Basic questions, to someone skilled, are second nature movements, which is probably why most balk at them.

Safety techniques, productivity tips, general tool usage.. Things that a "master" doesn't think about anymore; these are the things that we need to share with new comers. The things that we think "man, that's so obvious!" Yes - obvious to you, the person who has been in the hobby for ____ time.

We can be blinded by our experience, forgetting what it was like to learn. Remember, someone taught you once. You, too, were asking questions once.

Was your unit working just fine 5 minutes ago? Now it’s not cutting?

Check your optics. Dont touch your mirrors. Eliminate everything else it may be, first.

Despite what people like to say, it’s not your mirrors, especially if it was working previously. Ask yourself, did my machine take a knock? Did something hit it? If no, its not your mirrors.

Can you cut SOLID WOOD with a laser?!

Yep.

1) Absolutely you can cut solid wood with your laser.
2) the thickness is going to be determined by the density of the wood itself, and how well you have your mirrors aligned.
2.5) Example: You might be able to cut through 1/2" of Pine, but you wouldn't be able to do that with Hickory
3) You can buy solid wood that's laser tested from Trotec (https://bit.ly/KGLaser)
4) You can also find solid wood you can cut with your laser at big box lumber yards, or your local mills.

Let's talk about laser rotary devices!

When shopping for rotaries (to engrave round objects) you're gonna be hit with a LOT of information; most of them are going to be ads or promotions.

You're likely to have heard/read about the PiBurn or the Rotoboss rotaries. You may have also come across chuck rotaries.

*Let's start the comparison with their pricing:*

PiBurn retails at: $849 USD
RotoBoss retails at: $1,400 USD
D80 Chuck + Driver retail at: $205 USD
D80 Chuck + Driver + Base: $370USD

*Why do people choose these units?*

The RotoBoss advertises and carries itself as the MOST versatile rotary you'll ever use. It's adjustable, 3D printed, and has bits and bobs such as mug clamps to hold your cup in place and keep it from walking off the rotary (very common issue)

The PiBurn presents itself to you in the same way. Complicated, full of bells and whistles.

Chuck-style rotaries are time tested, and one of the older styles of rotaries. They're commonly used in CNC milling applications and in spinning machines, such as wood or metal lathes. A chuck can grip a tumbler or a pencil. Adjusting the chuck rotary is a matter of loosening a screw in order to tilt the head, and tightening the screw. That's it. Level and even lasering field, every time. No clamps, no heel plates, no need for bells or whistles.

What do I use?

Personally, I use the Cloudray D80 chuck rotary. It's adjustable, quick to set up, easy to use, and repeatability on it is as easy as pie.

No reason to overspend unnecessarily on an over-engineered product to accomplish what can be done with simplicity, and more cost effectively.

Do you enjoy reading? I do - it's why I'm so good at researching information. Reading has also helped me grow and shape myself.

What's the most influential book you've read? It doesn't have to be something "serious" or "adult" to be influential. It doesn't even have to be a book you read recently, or one that influenced you a little in your adult life.

The book that had the greatest impact on me, I think, has to be "Dear Mr. Henshaw" by Beverly Cleary - it resonated with me. It taught me it's okay to feel my feelings, and to explore healthy ways of reflecting. It was the catalyst into my journaling, which turned into blogging, which turned into tiktok videos.. Can't start too early, and there's no limit on when you should.

Never underestimate the impact that could be had, when you read.

Let's talk about fiber laser F-Theta lenses!

*What is the difference between a fiber lens, and CO2 gantry lenses?*
The difference between F-Theta lenses and scanning optics is the way it outputs over a certain field. They operate very similarly to traditional optics found in CO2 much in the same manner as you would think, with one notable exception. Gantry lenses require the head to move (scan) to output the entirety of the workspace. Fiber/Galvo machines have a fixed point the head sits at, and the laser is focused to move around the workspace through the lens.

*What do I mean?*
Just like a 1" FL on a gantry would provide more power in its punch, a smaller focused F-Theta does the same. Smaller focal area = power amplification but smaller work space. Bigger focal area = power reduction but bigger work surface.

*What lenses are good for what application?*
a 70mm lens is great for using as much power output from your laser as possible. They have a smaller "workspace" and provides more oomph because it's so focused. If you're looking to do deep engravings, challenge coins, or want to rip a hole in some metal - 70mm is where it's at. This would be = to a 1" or 1.5" FL for a CO2 gantry

175mm is great all-around/general purpose lens. This comes standard with most new fiber machines. This would be = to a 2.5" - 3" FL for a CO2 gantry.

300mm is best suited for cylindrical objects where you need more "play" with your focal height. It also is good for batch marking orders where you'd want to place more parts down to mark at once. A 300mm focal area is going to reduce the overall power output at point of contact with the work piece. This is like a 4"+ FL for a CO2 gantry.

What’s the difference between buying direct from a manufacturer/supplier vs. Buying off a third party platform such as eBay or Amazon?

This is an OFFICIAL statement from OMTech Laser:

Why are prices of products on omtechlaser.com different from the same products on other retail sites? Is there any difference in ordering from the Official Website (omtechlaser.com) or on other Third-Party Platforms?

Different platforms have different policies that affect the price we can offer. Customer support services from OMTech headquarters in Anaheim, California, will only be applied to orders placed through the official website (www.omtechlaser.com) and are guaranteed exclusive access to US-based after-sale customer service & technical support over the phone and email — even if your product is beyond warranty.

Purchases from third-party sites include limited tech support help and pay-per-session virtual tech support. If your products are purchased through other third-party platforms, we are not responsible for your order as your order information is not in our system.

Why it's important to read the MSDS of materials you work with!

I've read in several different groups that Oracal/Orafol/Orajet 651 and 3651 are laser safe.

A quick google, pulled up a safety data sheet, and bam - it is not laser safe.

Be careful, else you'll end up sick or with a busted machine.
