BTB - The 2023 Pok Ta Pok World Cup Championship is currently being hosted in Belize from December 8-10, 2023. Belize’s Ek Balam is the three-time World Champion and will represent Belize along with the Kinich Ahaw male and female teams. Other competing countries include El Salvador, the United States, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. This is the fifth male world tournament and the first year featuring female teams.
The event is being organized locally by Kanan Miatstil and the Belize Maya Ancestral Sport Pok Ta Pok Association. The event commenced with an opening ceremony this morning at the Multipurpose Complex in Orange Walk Town. Following the ceremony, the excitement unfolded as teams engaged in adrenaline-filled matches simultaneously hosted at the Multipurpose Complex and People's Stadium. 🚄Regional News - RM News - "Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Chatter has begun again about the possibility of extending a section of Quintana Roo Maya Train into Belize. On Wednesday, Governor Mara Lezama Espinoza broached the topic as a proposal once Mexico’s seven Tren Maya sections are complete.
She said there is the possibility of expanding the Tren Maya project beyond Mexico’s borders by extending the route to Belize. Such a project would efficiently connect southeastern Mexico with Central and South America, thus strengthening commercial and tourism ties in the region.
Lezama Espinoza indicated that the proposal to extend the Maya Train to Belize would be carried out after the completion of all 1,554 kilometers of currently planned track, which is scheduled for the end of February 2024.
The Governor pointed out that the proposal to extend the Maya Train to Belize is already in the hands of the Federal Government of Mexico. She reported that evaluations are currently being conducted to determine the feasibility of connecting the Maya Train internationally with a particular focus on the neighboring nation of Belize.
This project represents a unique opportunity to improve connectivity and cultural and economic exchange between Mexico and Belize, she said. The possibility of the Maya Train crossing borders implies not only progress in terms of infrastructure, but also an important step towards greater regional integration.
However, Lezama emphasized that President López Obrador’s current priority is the completion of the Maya Train in Mexico. The focus is on ensuring that the project reaches its full potential domestically before expanding internationally.
In October 2021, during a visit to Mexico, Belize Prime Minister Johnny Briceño expressed interest in connecting his country with Mexico’s Tren Maya. During that visit, the Prime Minister of Belize met with various Mexican authorities in Cancun including then-Fonatur head Rogelio Jiménez Pons.
The pair discussed the possibility of the Maya Train connecting not only to the Chetumal-Belize border, but also to Santa Elena, which Pons said at the time, would bring great benefits to that area.
If approved, it would not represent any modification in terms of investment to the project in Mexico since Belize would seek its own investments from private initiatives, Pons reported during that visit"

This policy is a 10-year road map for the development of the cruise ship industry in Belize and was developed based on extensive consultations among local and international partners from the public and private sector. It aligns and complements the strategic vision for Belize’s tourism development established within the National Sustainable Master Plan 2030 and the National Tourism Policy.
At the official launching, Mr. Evan Tillett, Director of Tourism, gave the welcome remarks while Mrs. Nicole Solano, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Tourism & Diaspora Relations, delivered the keynote address. Mr. Abil Castañeda, Chief Tourism Officer, made a presentation on the policy to tour operators and industry stakeholders in attendance.

In June 25th, 2023 we reported that Alex Nuňez, a former school teacher of San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye was being sought by the Belize Police Department for questioning in several criminal complaints made against him for alleged fraudulent land transactions and swindling persons out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Nuňez has been on the run ever since.
The Belize Police Department has finally caught up with the elusive Alex Nuňez and he is now in Police custody at the San Pedro Police Station.
In a consent order from a SUPREME COURT Claim 153 of 2009, Alex Nuňez, has been ordered by the Belize Supreme Court to pay over $775,000.00 in damages, restitution and interest. His default in this consent order may just be another of his many alleged criminal acts that he will be faced with.

The Supplies Control Unit (SCU) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise hereby informs the public that the first round of establishment inspections for compliance with provisions of the new Supplies Control (Prices) Regulations were carried out between September 1st and November 3rd 2023.
During this period, a total of 112 retail outlets were inspected countrywide. A total of fifty-nine (59) establishments were issued tickets for violations of the regulations. On Wednesday, Governor Mara Lezama Espinoza broached the topic as a proposal once Mexico’s seven Tren Maya sections are complete. She said there is the possibility of expanding the Tren Maya project beyond Mexico’s borders by extending the route to Belize. Such a project would efficiently connect southeastern Mexico with Central and South America, thus strengthening commercial and tourism ties in the region. Lezama Espinoza indicated that the proposal to extend the Maya Train to Belize would be carried out after the completion of all 1,554 kilometers of currently planned track, which is scheduled for the end of February 2024. The Governor pointed out that the proposal to extend the Maya Train to Belize is already in the hands of the Federal Government of Mexico. She reported that evaluations are currently being conducted to determine the feasibility of connecting the Maya Train internationally with a particular focus on the neighboring nation of Belize. This project represents a unique opportunity to improve connectivity and cultural and economic exchange between Mexico and Belize, she said. The possibility of the Maya Train crossing borders implies not only progress in terms of infrastructure, but also an important step towards greater regional integration. However, Lezama emphasized that President López Obrador’s current priority is the completion of the Maya Train in Mexico. The focus is on ensuring that the project reaches its full potential domestically before expanding internationally. Thank you to our BDF for your invaluable service to Belize. Here is a brief history of our Belize Fag. Archive - "Belize gained its independence from Great Britain in 1981, and the young nation has one of the most intricately designed flags of any country in the world. The flag of Belize was designed after a long political process involving all the stakeholders in the country. The principal color (field) on the flag is royal blue with one red horizontal stripe at the top and one horizontal red stripe at the top. In the center of the flag is the Belize coat of arms which was designed in 1907 and based on the badge worn by British soldiers stationed in Belize. The coat of arms lists the national motto Sub Umbra Floreo which is Latin for “Under the Shade, I Flourish.” Pictured on the coat of arms are two men, one black and one Mestizo, making it the only country flag in the world with a human being depicted on it. The Mestizo man is carrying an axe while the black man is carrying a paddle. The axe refers to Belize’s origins as a timber outpost while the paddle represents the importance of the coast. Some locals refer to the two men as the “Yellow Man and Chocolate Man.” In between the two men there is a mahogany tree, an important indigenous species of hardwood that was one of the primary types of trees logged by the early settlers.
