EDUCATION GETS OVER P15 BILLION
The Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) has been allocated the lionβs share of the national budget under the recurrent at P15.04 billon. Delivering the budget estimates today in Parliament, Finance Minister, Hon Peggy Serame had this to say;
βMr. Speaker, the largest share amounting to fifteen billion and forty million P**a (P15.04 billion), which is 24.9 percent of the proposed Recurrent Budget, is allocated to the newly re-structured Ministry of Education and Skills Development.
This amount is an increase of three billion and twenty million P**a (P3.02 billion) over the approved budget for the current financial year amounting to twelve billion and twenty million P**a (P12.02 billion). Consistent with national priorities, the substantial allocation under this Ministry demonstrates Governmentβs commitment to strengthening Human Capital and Skills Development that is required in the quest to transform Botswana into a knowledge-based economy.
The proposed budget mainly covers teachersβ salaries and allowances, operational costs for State Owned Enterprises in the education sector, tertiary studentsβ allowances, food and books for students.
In addition, the increase is also proposed to cover invigilation costs under Botswana Examinations Council, the review of Junior Secondary Schools syllabi as well as operationalization of Maun Centre for Special Education which has the capacity to absorb 100 learners with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.β
