Former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament, Mpho Balopi, has made shocking claims that he was poisoned, allegedly as part of internal political battles within the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Speaking in Tutume during his campaign for the BDP presidential candidacy, Balopi alleged that his own parents had witnessed his suffering after he was poisoned. โ€œI kept quiet and wondered why people can hate so much that they want to end your life. I am telling you here because my parents are here today, they are the ones who took care of me,โ€ he said.

Balopi, who was once a close ally of former President Mokgweetsi Masisi, fell out with the ex-leader before the BDP lost the October 2024 general elections. He is now seeking to lead the party as it reorganizes following its defeat.

The allegations were first reported by Intercom Media , which is currently following Balopiโ€™s nationwide consultation tour. His claims have sparked debate within the BDP, with some questioning whether political rivalries within the party could have escalated to such dangerous levels.

As of now, Balopi has not provided further details or evidence regarding the alleged poisoning. The BDP leadership is yet to comment on his claims.

Balopiโ€™s campaign for the BDP presidency comes at a time of internal party divisions, with different factions vying for control ahead of the partyโ€™s elective congress. His allegations add a new dimension to the ongoing battle for leadership within Botswanaโ€™s former ruling party.

Francistown Council Removes Illegal Signage

The City of Francistown Council (COFC) is currently removing all illegal advertisement boards, billboards, and signs around the city. This is part of an ongoing effort to enforce the Town and Country Planning Act of 2013, specifically Section 24, which requires all developments, including advertising structures, to be approved by the Council before installation.

The removal process started in February 2025 and is expected to be completed by April 2025. The Council aims to ensure that all signage complies with the law.

Local musician Odirile โ€˜Veeโ€™ Sento has thanked President Duma Boko for fulfilling his five-year-old pledge to sponsor the tombstone of the late rapper, Dramaboi. The ceremony took place earlier today, marking a significant moment for the late artistโ€™s family, fans, and the music community.

In a speech during the unveiling, Sento recalled that President Boko had made the pledge at Dramaboi's funeral, which was held during the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, many were skeptical about whether the promise would be honored.

โ€œFive years ago, President Duma Boko made a pledge at a time when the country was going through difficult times due to the pandemic. He attended Dramaboiโ€™s funeral and promised to provide a tombstone. We did not believe this would come to fruition, but today, we are here, and we are thankful for the President keeping his word,โ€ Sento said.

The tombstone unveiling, funded by President Boko, provided an opportunity for the local music community and Dramaboiโ€™s supporters to come together to honor his legacy.

Prominent businessman and philanthropist Tshepang Mabaila has extended a helping hand to a law student who is reportedly battling depression and possible drug addiction. Taking to social media, Mabaila urged the studentโ€™s family to reach out to him, expressing hope for a positive outcome.

"There is a law student trending who is allegedly suffering from depression or drug addiction. Kindly ask the parents to contact me. Letโ€™s see what the Lord will do," Mabaila posted.

Reports suggest that the student lost his parents and has since struggled with severe emotional distress. His case has sparked widespread concern, with many calling for urgent intervention.

Mabaila, a seasoned entrepreneur and policy advocate, is no stranger to assisting individuals battling drug addiction and mental health challenges. A few years ago, he played a key role in rehabilitating a once-promising athlete, Lernard Modise, whose life had spiraled out of control.

Now, with this law student's plight coming to light, Mabailaโ€™s willingness to step in once again reinforces his long-standing commitment to social welfare. It remains to be seen how this intervention will unfold, but one thing is certainโ€”help is on the way.

Implementation of Mother Tongue Education in Botswana Schools Faces Setbacks

The Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Nono Kgafela Mokoka, has revealed key challenges in the implementation of mother tongue education in Botswana schools, citing training gaps, funding shortages, and a lack of monitoring.

Responding to Maun West MP Mr. K. C. Hikuamaโ€™s parliamentary question regarding the current state of mother tongue teaching and learning, the minister explained that the policy, launched in 2023, was introduced in 170 primary schools covering 13 local languages.

(i) How Mother Tongue Teaching and Learning is Implemented

The program is designed for preschool learners up to Standard 2, with native languages used as a medium of instruction for explanations rather than as standalone subjects. Teachers and teacher aides fluent in the local languages were identified, trained, and deployed to facilitate implementation.

The minister emphasized that if a school already has a teacher who speaks the local language, there is no need to recruit an additional teacher aide. The policy aims to create an environment where young learners can better understand concepts in their mother tongue before transitioning to English as the primary medium of instruction.

(ii) Challenges in Implementing the Policy

While the initiative has been rolled out, several obstacles have hindered its success. The minister acknowledged that some teacher aides had not received adequate training, leading to difficulties in classroom delivery. Additionally, some non-native speakers were engaged based on their declared fluency, but implementation revealed that they faced challenges and required further training.

Another major issue affecting the initiative is the lack of sufficient native language teachers. Many schools struggle to find qualified educators who can effectively teach in the required languages, leading to inconsistencies in program ex*****on.

Furthermore, the minister cited financial constraints as a major impediment, particularly in monitoring and evaluating the initiativeโ€™s effectiveness. Without proper oversight, it has been difficult to assess the impact of the program and address emerging issues.

The government has pledged to address these concerns, but without increased investment in training and monitoring, the effectiveness of mother tongue education in Botswana remains uncertain.
