- Remembering Rre Mogae, the BDP politician & member.
Born in Serowe in 1939, Former President HE Festus Gontebanye Mogae was an economist educated at the University College, Oxford in the UK with a BA in Economics and the University of Sussex also in the UK, earning a Masterβs in Development Economics. He also attended secondary school at Moeng College in Botswana.
He joined Botswana's civil service post-independence, serving as Director of Economic Affairs, Permanent Secretary to the President, and Governor of the Bank of Botswana.
In 1989 after his illustrious career as an Economist & Governor, Rre Festus Gontebanye Mogae was then specially elected to Parliament by the then President, Sir Ketumile Masire and then appointed Minister of Finance and Development Planning. In 1994 he then contested and won an MP seat at Palapye. He was then appointed Vice President after the resignation of Rre Peter Mmusi, managing the economy and enhancing financial stability. In 1998 Rre Mogae then assumed the presidency on April 1, 1998, after Sir Ketumile Masire retired from the Presidency. Rre Mogaeβs term as President ended on 1st April 2008.
