Naseem Banu Lahri is a seasoned Executive Leader with with more than 18 years of experience inthe mining industry.

At The Future of Mining Summit Ms. Lahri will delve into the latest trends shaping the global diamond market and how Lucara is navigating the challenges posed by the cyclical nature of the consumer market.

She will provide insights on technology, provenance, sustainability, and social investment, unpacking how these factors will influence the perspective of natural diamond consumers going forward.

Her presentation will be titled “Trends Shaping the Global Diamond Industry | Lessons from Lucara Botswana.

Naseem Banu Lahri has a Masters in Strategic Management (BCOM, FCCA) and has held keystrategic roles throughout her career.

In May 2018 she was promoted to the position of ManagingDirector at Lucara Botswana, being the first woman and the first Motswana woman to serve inthis capacity for a diamond mining company in Botswana and the youngest female MD in miningin the world.

Throughout most of her career, Lahri has taken strategic positions on different boards. She hasserved as a board member on the Debswana Pension Fund, Botswana Accountancy College andPula Medical Aid.

She was recently appointed as a board member at First National Bank Botswana
which is rated the best bank in the country.

Lahri was labelled by Forbes, the New Yorker, Mining Weekly and Vogue as the youngest femaleto run a diamond mine in the world and a trailblazer in the industry.

In November 2020, she wasnominated as the Top 100 Women in Mining.In addition, Lahri was nominated under the Business Woman of the year category at the 2022 AllAfrica Business Leaders Awards.

She was awarded the Forbes Woman Africa Impact Award atthe 2022 All Africa Business Leaders Awards. The award honours female leaders who havetransformed a market, company, product or service and who, through their work.This award hasonly been awarded to 4 women (Lahri included) in the 10 years history of the AABLA Awards.

During the 11th African Leadership Magazine Awards in 2023, Lahri was conferred with the AfricanMining Personality of the Year Award.

The award is in recognition of Naseem Lahri's strategicleadership pedigree in the mining sector which is marked by excellence,tenacity and dedicationto duty.

In 2023, Lahri was chosen to represent the Diamond, gold and/or platinum group metalsoroducer forum on the RJC Board of Directors.

Lahri has been named the African Female Leaderof the Year 2024 by the African Leadership Organisation.

JWANENG MINE WINS ALL QUARTER TWO ANGLO AMERICAN P101 2022 GOLDEN PLANT AWARDS

Debswana’s Jwaneng Mine has registered another clean sweep in the quarter Two Anglo American P101 2022 Golden Plant Awards, Best Beneficiation Plant Category: Main Treatment Plant (MTP) scooped first place followed in second place by Recrush Plant (RP) and Jwaneng Modular Plant (JMP) in third place.

“The latest brilliant results, and previous ones, are a clear recognition of our Processing Operational Excellence borne out of our relentless commitment to insistently set the bar high for Beneficiation plants. This astounding performance comes after another exceptional one recorded earlier in the year: Recrush Plant (RP) won the quarter one 2022 Golden Plant Award in the same category followed in second place by Main Treatment Plant (MTP). Further, reflection on past performance demonstrates admirable trail of dominance: Jwaneng Modular Plant emerged as the overall winner in the same category in 2020 and 2021.

The latest results mirror our performance in the 2021 quarter three Group Processing Golden Plant Awards as we recorded another clean sweep: Recrush Plant took first place, with Jwaneng Modular Plant (JMP) and Jwaneng Main Treatment Plant (MTP) coming second and third respectively. Jwaneng Mine Senior Ore Processing Manager, Kgolagano Banabotlhe acknowledged and applauded Main Treatment Plant (MTP) team for the unparalleled breakthrough performance. He also lauded the human diamonds based at Recrush Plant and Jwaneng Modular Plant (JMP) for their spirited and resilient commitment as they managed to come out of tough operational challenges to make it to the podium. Banabotlhe said, “This, without doubt, is a demonstration that our integrated approach to challenges makes it easy for us to rise above and beyond stumbling blocks to deliver benchmark performance on both Safety and Production. I have no doubt that Jwaneng Mine will safely deliver 2022 targets as we are intentional about leveraging on cutting edge technology to make our operation the smartest and safest in the world.”

The Best Beneficiation Plant award goes to the Minerals Processing plant in MetCoal, PGM, Copper, Iron Ore and Diamond operations, spanning Concentrators, Gravity separation, Dense Media separation and Direct Shipping Process Plants, that delivered the most exceptional and consistent performance in achieving Safe Production. Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), as a factor of what was committed to in the business plan, is used to define the “Achieved Operational Excellence” for the quarter. The award considers the operating time or runtime, throughput rate, recovery efficiency and safety performance to determine the safest, most exceptional and consistent operation.

UB & KHOEMACAU EXPLORE POSSIBLE AREAS OF COLLABORATION

Vice Chancellor, Professor David Norris and his delegation from the University of Botswana main campus and Okavango Research Institute (ORI) on September 23, 2022 visited Khoemacau mine at Toteng to explore possible areas of collaboration and partnership.

The delegation comprised ORI Director, Professor Joseph Mbaiwa, Deputy Director Professor, Olekae Thakadu, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Professor Edward Dintwa and Senior Executive in Vice Chancellor’s office, Mr Moeng Segaetsho.

At the mine, the university delegation was met by khoemacau Managing Director, Mr Kevin Moxham and his senior staff. The objective of the visit was to explore possibilities for partnership and collaboration with the mine.

Minergy Botswana, thermal coal producer is looking to a maiden operating profit in the current financial year as offshore markets previously closed to it become viable.

According to the company’s CEO, Morné du Plessis, the overall outlook for the coming year is positive and is forecast to be operationally profitable as demonstrated in quarter four, which would be the first year for such an achievement after challenging start up years.

Minergy, operates the Masama mine, announced a deepening in the year-on-year net loss after tax of P132m (P107m) ended-June. This was owing to constrained offtake related to an over-supplied domestic market regionally as exporters sought to offset limited freight capacity by selling to local buyers.

Unseasonal rains in April also impacted offtake. Minergy responded to these twin forces by limiting production in order to avoid unnecessary costs and the risk of spontanous combustion of stockpiles.

The operating loss was also a function of cost inflation of consumables. “Diesel and explosives increased by 127% and 57% respectively which was exacerbated by double-digit inflation in Botswana,” said Du Plessis.

He added, however that “the recovery recorded in the fourth quarter is setting the tone for profitability for FY23” on the back of a 150% year-on-year coal pricing lift.

The catalyst for the improvement in thermal coal prices was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “This led to extraordinary demand facilitating access to previously uncompetitive and uneconomical exports into the seaborne market during the fourth quarter,” said Du Plessis.

Minergy subsequently ramped up production to meet the increased demand with Masama finally bursting through its one million tons a year run of mine target.

Du Plessis said the company was considering further expansion of the Masama plant. “Opportunities to exceed production capacity and the resultant additional saleable production are being pursued,” said Du Plessis.

Debswana Diamond Company has formed a new company called Naledi Mining Services, a wholly owned subsidiary which will have its own management and board of directors.

The new entity will start providing labour services at the Jwaneng Cut 9 project in January 2023.

Naledi Mining Services will employ over 750 people, with an estimated annual turnover of P300 million.
