2024 International Day Of Persons With Disabilities (IDPD)

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed annually on December 3rd. The theme for this year is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future." This theme recognizes the important role that persons with disabilities play in creating a more inclusive and sustainable world for all. It also emphasizes the importance of the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes that affect their lives.

The theme this year reflects the current international political and policy context, in particular the Pact for the Future and the upcoming 2025 World Summit for Social Development, and the need to create momentum for achieving the 2030 Agenda. The theme seeks to amplify the centrality of the leadership role of persons with disabilities, in all of these efforts - from the global to the local.

Key Goals and Call to Action

1. Promoting the leadership of persons with disabilities in all areas of life.

2. Ensuring the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society.

3. Increasing the participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes.

4. Raising awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities.

5. Celebrating the achievements of persons with disabilities.

The IDPD 2024 will be commemorated with a series of events around the world. Botswana will hold the national commemoration on the 12th December 2024 in Francistown. This event will bring together persons with disabilities, government representatives, and civil society organizations. It is an important opportunity to celebrate the contributions of persons with disabilities. It is also a time to reflect on the challenges that persons with disabilities face.

This morning, the University of Botswana stadium buzzed with energy as the inaugural Gaborone Wheelchair Challenge kicked off.

The event drew an impressive turnout, with over 100 participants from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia coming together to compete.

Hosted by The Botswana Council for the Disabled and its partners, the Gaborone Wheelchair Challenge aims to celebrate Botswana's progress in developing a policy framework for the inclusion of persons with disabilities, as exemplified by the National Disability Policy 2021 and the Persons with Disability Act
2024.

The event featured an array of events, including competitive and non-competitive categories. Highlights include 42km and 21km handcycling races, a 10km wheelchair race, and a 5km fun push/run/walk.

GABORONE WHEELCHAIR CHALLENGE DATES MOVED TO AUGUST 10, 2024.

A very good afternoon registered athletes, administrators and supporters of the Gaborone Wheelchair Challenge.

The event has been moved to August 10 due to collision with the National Police Day which will be held at the National Stadium on August 3. Wheelchair Challenge needs Police officers in all junctions and continuous monitoring of the track. We had to move the date by week so that we can have the undivided attention of Botswana Police.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused, however i believe we rendered the apology well in time for you to be able to work on your travel schedules. Especially those coming outside Botswana and from Districts far from Gaborone.

We are committed to giving you the best Botswana experience while in Botswana.

Roles: Assist wheelchair users with mobility needs on track and at the venue, Man water points Marshals – assist with directions along the road and general security, General assistance (mealtimes, assistance at accommodation site, transport to and from the venue).
