Air Botswana is fast becoming Fly Namibia’s new cash cow as Botswana’s national airline continues to struggle with implementation of its fleet and route expansion project and now has entered into a new agreement to lease an aircraft. It pays about P4 million per month to FlyNamibia even though Air Botswana generates less than that a month.

Mid November Air Botswana started operating and EMB145 with the first flight operated between Gaborone and Francistown. The airline quietly introduced the aircraft into service without any announcement allowing the public to assume this aircraft was one of the newly acquired aircraft.

“However, this aircraft is a wolf in sheep’s clothing because it is actually Fly Namibia EMB145 painted in Air Botswana colours and leased to Air Botswana as the national airline’s aircraft remain grounded in Namibia,” disclosed a concerned Air Botswana employee. She said the slight of hand is to direct public perception to into gaining sentiment and the reminiscent of the publicity stunt when launching the EMB175 leading the public to believe the aircraft arrived that moment whenin fact had arrived several days earlier.

Air Botswana acquired two EMB145 that were controversially handed over to Namibia undera confidential management agreement also remain grounded as corrosion was discovered on one aircraft and the second is still undergoing the registration and importation formalities.
