Over the past five years, the transaction volume for digital wallets in Bhutan has been on a steady rise. In the third quarter of 2021, 667.35 thousand wallet transactions were recorded. This figure more than doubled in Q3 2022, reaching 1,668.23 thousand transactions.
By Q3 2023, the number of transactions had climbed to 2,507.73 thousand, but in Q3 2024, the volume dropped to 2,272.24 thousand, representing a decline of 9.39 percent compared to the same quarter the previous year.
Similarly, the transaction value has seen remarkable growth over the years but also faced a dip in Q3 2024. In Q3 2021, the total value of wallet transactions stood at Nu. 243.22 million. This rose significantly to Nu. 497.68 million in Q3 2022. By Q3 2023, the value reached Nu. 648.50 million. However, in Q3 2024, the value declined to Nu. 500.27 million, marking a 22.88 percent drop compared to the same quarter in 2023.
Among the four major e-wallets in the country, goBoB maintained its stronghold in the market, accounting for a dominant 79.37 percent of the total transaction volume. eTeeru secured the second position with 13.96 percent, followed by Bngul at 6.21 percent. Meanwhile, MyPay held the smallest share, contributing just 0.46 percent to the overall transaction volume.
In terms of transaction value, goBoB also led the market with a commanding 49.16 percent share. eTeeru followed with 27.84 percent, while Bngul accounted for 23.00 percent. Once again, MyPay held the smallest share, at 0.46 percent of the total value.

Bhutan is witnessing a remarkable surge in the utilization of QR codes for cashless payments, signaling a transformative shift in the nationโs financial landscape.
Over the past few years, the adoption of QR codes has grown significantly, with consumers embracing the convenience and efficiency of cashless transactions. Letโs take a closer look at the numbers.
In Q3 of 2021, Bhutan recorded 10.64 million QR code transactions, totaling Nu. 9.99 billion. Fast forward to Q3 of 2022, and these figures nearly doubled, reaching 21.07 million transactions valued at Nu. 18.64 billion.
The momentum continued through 2023 and 2024. By Q3 of last year, the transaction volume had risen to 26.97 million, worth Nu. 23.61 billion. In Q3 2024, this figure soared even higher to an impressive 32.88 million transactions, valued at Nu. 29.40 billion. This marks a 21.91% increase in transaction volume and a 24.54% growth in value compared to the same period in 2023.
Thimphu Dzongkhag has been at the forefront of this digital transformation. In Q3 2024 alone, 6,983 new merchants registered for QR code payments, a substantial increase compared to Q3 2023. Paro and Wangduephodrang registered 204 and 158 new merchants, respectively.
With QR code technology driving economic modernization, Bhutan is on its way to embracing a digital future.

In 2018, the Royal government of Bhutan inaugurated its first startup center in Changzamtok, Thimphu under the Department of Employment and Entrepreneurship. Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment to promote entrepreneurship in the country. The center was constructed with the financial assistance from the government of India.
This Center offers affordable incubation spaces, provides business development services like mentoring and training for capacity building, new product launch event for the incubates. It also helps in facilitating access of enacts in the market, ensuring that promising ideas evolve into a successful business venture.
Today the startup center has 36 incubates. It can accommodate up to 50 entrepreneurs. These businesses specialize in diverse products with high growth potential including cultural souvenirs, bags, chocolate, artwork, herbal products, food items handle in the software application.
Not to make any compromises on the innovative idea of startup the government establish and edition of startup center and Damdung under Samtse Dzongkhag. Further, had renovated and remodeled the old service center at Changzamtok in the 12th five-year plan.

Seven banks have approved Nu 236.03 million for 77 applicants under the fund. This initiative, through its two modalities, aims to ease financial pressure and revive businesses.
Under Modality-I, which provides a 4% annual interest subsidy on existing loans for up to three years, Nu 211.12 million was approved for 65 applicants. Meanwhile, under Modality-II, offering a similar interest subsidy on new loans, Nu 24.91 million was approved for 12 applicants. Borrowers must pay the difference between the subsidized and original rates and can opt for only one modality.
The Royal Monetary Authority oversees the fundโs allocation, with financial institutions reviewing borrowers annually.
Out of 225 applications received, Bhutan National Bank Limited approved the most, 44 applications worth Nu 74.33 million. Druk PNB Bank approved all 17 applications, totaling Nu 120.67 million. Other banks, including BoBL, BDBL, and RICBL, approved varying amounts, while T-Bank and BIL have yet to clear applications.
137 applications totaling Nu 296.09 million remain under assessment, with 21 applications rejected due to eligibility issues.
