Opposition Responds to Davis' Address

Tonight's national address on crime by Prime Minister Davis was his same old comments packaged differently. It was a missed opportunity for him to show the leadership Bahamians have been waiting and praying for on this life-and-death issue.

Most residents tuned into tonight's remarks with hopes of hearing specific crime-fighting strategies to reduce the frequency and viciousness of violence, particularly in New Providence. Many Bahamians believe that we are in the midst of a crisis that affects not only criminals known to the police but also ordinary citizens trying to live peacefully.

Instead, they got a carefully scripted public relations speech in response to mounting public criticism of their silence.

Residents got little comfort or hope this administration would take swift and comprehensive action to lead other stakeholders in the urgent battle to win back our streets, homes and communities from the fear and flow of violent crimes.

Nearly two and a half years later, the country is still waiting on a coherent short, medium, and long-term plan that addresses key areas of public concern about the crime epidemic. Tonight's speech was littered with generalities and an apparent absence of timelines for implementing promised measures. Regrettably, Prime Minister Davis failed to say how long some of these unknown committees and task forces have been working, what specific results they have achieved, or what accounts for their failure to reduce and reverse the horrible and tragic trends we are experiencing daily.

In March 2022, the opposition released strategic suggestions that the government could implement, and we intend to release more as early as tomorrow, January 15th, 2024, at noon as we comment in greater detail on the Prime Minister's Remarks.

Crime is not a political issue. However, before the Prime Minister flies off to yet another conference, his administration must focus on providing a holistic plan to address the trauma inflicted on our communities.
