when designing custom sounds there's a HUGE freedom involved from the very start of the production til the final Mastering stage. most samples will already come super processed/compressed/limited and it's absolutely amazing to have full control over the transients of the sounds while I design my samples from scratch.

when working with mixes that are intended to have a natural/vintage sound, I always like to start by automating the vox's phrase endings to bring up that natural warmth before adding any FX.
in some situations, less is more.
today was a 'ha' & 'papah' vocal day. lately I've been experimenting with tons of new unique vocal production/mixing techniques that add SO MUCH movement to the song! what's your favorite vocal production technique?
2023 was a spectacular year! the best project was definitely my horror album for trailers 'MIDNIGHT STRUMMING' with the phenomenal publisher Score a Score. already started the new year working on some dope sound design & new music. can't wait to show yall.
lots of new production/mixing/mastering techniques acquired on the last 12 months - SO ready to apply them all on new tunes. xx
while handling loudness in Mastering, there is a point where the mix basically tells me with words that it's being pushed too hard.
AND, there's always a sweetspot between that and the minimum amount of energy that the song in question requires for it's final stage (based on the genre, vibe, musical concept etc).
having said that, it’s always good to have actual metering numbers as a reference, but my ears provide the final call at all times. regardless of LUFS numbers, the final outcome for the Master will always be determined by the ‘sweetspot’ mentioned above + my referencing with actual released songs. at the end of the day, numbers are just numbers.
unless there’s a client telling me it needs to be the loudest f****ing thing in the world. LOL.

getting the drums ⚡️ LOUD ⚡️ with distortion/saturation while still maintaining a good dynamics?
here's an idea that usually works great with pretty much anything you might want particularly loud without totally killing the transients - saturating/distorting in STAGES.
or better, saturating/distorting the drums in stages while putting a transient processor slightly boosting a bit of the attack after each saturator. you can also replace the transient processor with an EQ slightly boosting the highs, pretty sweet too!

designing some new custom sounds for some productions/compositions. it's really fulfilling to record & create brand new sounds for a personalized vision of each project. having a bunch of original samples really helps bringing each song home.
not to mention that designing the sounds from scratch makes the mixing WAY more fun - and obviously, more fresh & original.
[yes the sound in question is quite literally me 'hitting the washing machine', it's got a GREAT ringing sound perfect for layering in some snares.]

Mastering a band's live session today. it's really inspiring to be able to grab a live session and polish it into something fantastic! I worked on the high-low frequency balance in order to provide the live session a more natural landscape, while controling stubborn frequencies & peaks.

a couple things I pretty much always run into/consider while mixing/mastering horror pieces.
1. AMPLITUDE BUILD UPS (which I made a video about a few weeks ago): these are SO common due to the level of energy that the track needs to have. these types of cues will most likely have regions of accumulated volume, which can be addressed in Mastering as I explained before in posts/videos.
2. 'TOO BALANCED MIX': this is a pretty interesting/fun thing. in horror we need to scare and leave the listener unsettled - so if a mix is TOO balanced it COULD not achieve these things properly.

this is a very interesting & unusual production/mix/master I had to work my way around. the artist sent me an old song recording of his which had NO separate instruments and no drums. he wanted me to finish the production, mix & master it. the original song has a very 'sketchy' mix with a darker, more vintage sound - so I had to produce some drums that would blend in smoothly. having all the drum arrangement figured out & produced, the only thing left to do was making the drums fit in with the original song's vibe, so I did some pretty cool stuff - I Mastered the drums SEPARATELY first to match the original song's tone, and then I Mastered everything TOGETHER to finish tightening things up. of course though, in the mix I used some flavourful reverbs to help making it sound like it was produced at the same place at the same time.
