As season 14 of Blue Bloods winds down, it appears Tom Selleck already has his sights set on another possible project. The CBS icon revealed that he would like to revive one of his most popular characters — and it’s shockingly not Thomas Magnum.

It turns out, Tom, 79, would be interested in another stint as Jesse Stone.

“It looks like now I might have to write [a script for another movie]” he told TV Insider last month when asked about what was next for him after finishing filming Blue Bloods. “It wouldn’t be a final one because everybody loves it. Jesse is a great character, and it would be fascinating to find out where he is quite a few years later. But I need to regroup; I don’t know what’s next, but assuming the phone doesn’t stop ringing, I’m going to keep working.”

Blue Bloods Season 14’s Ratings Were Never Likely To Save It
CBS Had Already Decided To End Blue Bloods Before The Season Began

Sadly, it was unlikely to matter how many people watched Blue Bloods season 14, as CBS had decided that this would be the final season before it began. CBS took a long time to renew Blue Bloods after season 13 despite its strong ratings and passionate fan base, ultimately agreeing to season 14 only if the cast and crew took a 25% pay cut. While the cast’s willingness to do so speaks to their dedication to fans, the fact that they needed to make this sacrifice shows that the reason Blue Bloods was canceled was financial.

CBS decided that Blue Bloods was too expensive to continue producing, and that concern was never going to be offset by the strength of its ratings.

Most of the cast had remained with the series for all fourteen seasons, which meant they commanded high salaries, and the procedural had an unusually large cast — including Tom Selleck, whose well-known name contributed to the salary he drew. Additionally, Blue Bloods was filmed in New York, which is more expensive than filming in a studio in Los Angeles. For all these reasons, CBS decided that Blue Bloods was too expensive to continue producing, and that concern was never going to be offset by the strength of its ratings

Donnie Wahlberg is looking back at this past year with appreciation. The Blue Bloods actor shared a reflective post for New Year’s to celebrate entering 2025.

“In a year of emotional farewells, happy reunions, thrilling surprises and new beginnings, one thing was always present in #2024 — the love and kindness that I felt from so many,” he captioned a video shared on Instagram on Wednesday, January 1. “There are a million words (and feelings) that hit me when I look back at the past year, but ‘Thank you’ are the two most meaningful.”

“Thank you to every single person that I had the honor of saying hello to, snapping a selfie with or giving a welcome hug to,” he continued. “Thank you for every kind message, for every word of support and for every ounce of positive energy that so many of you sent my way. I hope I did a decent job of sending that love and energy right back to you. Most of all, thank you lord for the blessing of another year.”

“Not a single day was promised to me and I’m so grateful for each and every one of them — and for the many moments that I was blessed to experience over the last twelve months,” the post concluded. “I look back on #2024, with love and gratitude! I look forward to the coming year, exactly the same way! We’re on to #2025!”
