Posted • Officially launched last night, the Michael Kirby Building at Wallumattagal Campus on Dharug Country in Sydney, Australia is a new learning destination that puts interdisciplinary knowledge and lifelong learning at the forefront of its mission.

The upcycled building — a former 1985-built concrete administration centre — has been transformed through adaptive reuse into a four-storey hub for learning featuring a lighter, timber-framed structural system and glazed façade.

Central to the building is a naturally ventilated top-lit atrium, which houses various gathering spaces to encourage interaction and the exchange of ideas.

Home to Macquarie University Law School and the Department of Philosophy, it’s also a resource for the broader university community.

Commercial Building

Jackson Clements Burrows Architects
T3 Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria

• • •

Posted • T3 Collingwood is Melbourne’s tallest timber hybrid office building and the first of ’ innovative Timber, Transit, and Technology concept in Australia.

The building has 15 levels, nine featuring a cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure. Compared to traditional construction methods, using CLT allows for faster construction, a lighter building weight, and significantly reduced carbon emissions throughout its life cycle.

Our team provided Environmentally Sustainable Design services, as well as structural, civil, facades, mechanical, electrical, hydraulics, fire protection, acoustics, and audio-visual services. We conducted an embodied carbon assessment to help inform Hines about the environmental benefits of choosing sustainable building materials over conventional methods.

The hybrid timber solution boasts a 34% reduction in estimated upfront carbon emissions (A1-A5, EN15978) versus the same building when designed with a conventional steel-reinforced concrete frame. With a 6 Star Green Star Design Review and targeting a 5.5 Star NABERS Energy rating, T3 Collingwood leads the way in sustainability.

Iwona Buczkowska, 2024 Jane Drew Prize for Architecture!! 👏👏👏

—————
The Pierre Semard Secondary school in Bobigny is not like the others. Iwona Buczkowska, its architect, thought of it as a village. The structure consists of 48 arches which free the ground and create atypical spaces. It is a place of pleasure, relaxation, play and education. The central courtyard can be transformed into a theatre stage with the presence of bleachers on the upper part of the passageway. The building made of wood goes beyond the classic codes by offering a multitude of spaces to be discovered. Buczkowska recognises that it is a complex building that the pupil has to make his own, like the complexity of the outside world. In a documentary directed by Jean Pierre Lefebvre (on YouTube), one of the students laughingly says "[The students] feel better here than at home". Yet the building built in 1994 is destined to be destroyed. Victim of a lack of maintenance, this abandonment also seems to betray the municipality's rejection of this original and generous place, which is the antithesis of traditional schools.

Posted • The Polish-French architect Iwona Buczkowska is the recipient of the 2024 Jane Drew Prize for Architecture, part of the 2024 W Awards. A pioneer of timber construction and fierce defender of the right to good housing, she encourages us to think of architecture’s contribution to social ecology.

For our March issue, dedicated to the W Awards, .mollard explores Buczkowska’s life and work. ‘Iwona Buczkowska’s unshakeable belief in the potential for buildings to improve lives is a reminder that architectural decisions are inherently political,’ argues Mollard.
