Most of Praia de Boa Viagem is protected by a barrier of natural reefs, which gave the city its name.

Headquarters of Pernambuco government, built by the Count of Boa Vista (Francisco do Rego Barros) in the year 1841-1843, in neoclassical style, having been expanded in 1922 in eclectic style.

The palace became known as Campo das Princesas after the visit of the Imperial family to Pernambuco, in 1859. Inside it has beautiful furniture, works of art and a garden designed by landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx.
