A standpipe is a vertical pipe connected to a P-trap that allows washing machine drainage. It prevents wastewater from siphoning back into the washing machine, maintaining a sanitary system. Plumbing codes require a standpipe to be between 18 and 30 inches in height to ensure proper drainage without overflowing. A vent must be installed near the standpipe to prevent airlock and slow drainage. The P-trap below the standpipe plays a crucial role in preventing sewer gases from escaping into the laundry area. If a standpipe is too short, water may overflow; if too tall, the pump may struggle to expel water properly. Using the correct pipe diameter, usually 2 inches, ensures efficient drainage. Regular cleaning of the standpipe prevents detergent and lint buildup, which can cause clogs. Ensuring proper standpipe installation extends the lifespan of the washing machine drainage system.
