NYU Performs World’s First Fully Robotic Double Lung Transplant

In a groundbreaking medical milestone, NYU Langone Health has successfully completed the world’s first fully robotic double lung transplant.

Using the da Vinci Xi robotic system, surgeons performed the complex procedure on a 57-year-old woman with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The robotic system utilized small incisions between the ribs to remove the patient’s damaged lungs, prepare the surgical site, and implant the donor lungs—all without the need for traditional large incisions.

This achievement represents a significant leap in minimally invasive surgical care, reducing postoperative pain and recovery time.

The patient, Cheryl Mehrkar, inherited a genetic predisposition to lung disease and saw her condition worsen after contracting COVID-19 in 2022. Despite health challenges, she remained active in her community as a volunteer emergency medical technician. “By using these robotic systems, we aim to reduce the impact this major surgery has on patients and give them the best possible outcome,” said Dr. Stephanie Chang, who led the surgical team. The procedure builds on NYU’s previous milestone of performing the first fully robotic single lung transplant in the U.S. just a month earlier.

This success also coincides with advancements in robotic surgical autonomy. Researchers at Stanford and Johns Hopkins have developed robotic systems that, through imitation learning, can replicate complex surgical tasks like suturing and tissue handling with human-like precision. By leveraging vast datasets from da Vinci Surgical Systems, these robots could soon perform intricate procedures independently. Together, these breakthroughs highlight the growing potential of robotic surgery to transform patient outcomes and set a new standard for minimally invasive care.
