M is for Max

Max is our family dog. He is a beagle and is 8 years old.

He is completely, utterly stupid.

The only two things he cares about are going for walks and eating. He will eat almost anything. He gets very confused when there is food and somebody is offering to take him for a walk at the same time.

We all love Max.

Do you have a pet? Did you have a pet when you were younger? What pet would you love to get in the future? Tell me about your pets in the comments section.

L is for linguistics

About 20 years ago, I took a year out of teaching to go back to university and study for an MA in Linguistics.

I had a fantastic year reading and thinking about language. There are so many amazing facets of language. How do we learn language? Is there anything that links all the human languages? How can language be used for good or bad? How do we learn a second language? What is language?

There are so many questions associated with linguistics. And the things is, linguistics affects every single one of us, whether we realise it or not. We are all studying linguistics.

If you had the chance, is there anything you would like to study at university?

K is for Klatch

Klatch is a country. Ok, so it isn’t a real country. It is a country created by the writer Terry Pratchett. I absolutely adore Terry Pratchett.

He wrote a series of satirical fantasy books about a place that is totally different to this planet that we live on because there are giants and witches and trolls and wizard universities and the earth is flat and is carried by 4 elephants who stand on the back of a giant turtle.

But, it is most definitely the same place where we live.

By creating a fantasy world, Terry Pratchett was able to look at the way we live in fine detail. And he does it with humour and love and charm.

Do you have a favourite book or writer? Tell me about them in the comments. I am always on the lookout for new books to read.

Example: The topic of tax reform is a hot potato in politics. Everyone knows we need to do something, but nobody wants to be the one to do it.

J is for juggle

I learned to juggle while at university. It helps me to relax and take my mind off any problems I might be facing.

I don’t juggle that much nowadays, but I still have a few juggling balls at home and occasionally I pick them up and throw them around.

And who knows, if this teaching English business does not work out, I can always go and juggle at the traffic lights and try to earn some money that way.

What unusual skill do you have? What do you do to take your mind off things? I’d love to hear about them in the comments.

I is for Ireland

I was born in England, but my family is Irish.

Not many people know about Irish history. It struggled for centuries against English oppression to become a broad-minded, forward-thinking country.

The people can talk. They have the gift of the gab, which means they are charming and can talk to you about almost anything.

The Irish tend to like a drink and a party. I have had some great parties and laughs with my Irish family.

The Irish have produced cultural masters such as Joyce, Yeats, Shaw, Beckett, Heaney, and Wilde. What an amazing list of writers that is.

And music! Irish music, both traditional and modern is a joy to behold.

If you have the chance, read a bit more about Ireland. If you visit, you will have a great time, but please remember your umbrella, because it never stops raining.

What do you know about Ireland? Let me know in the comments and I will answer every single one.

H is for history

My favourite teacher when I was at school was Mr. Roberts. Mr. Roberts taught us history and I can still remember so many things that he taught us.

I still love history. I can often be found reading a historical novel or listening to a podcast about history.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t do this as a way of escaping the present. I like history because I can see why things are like this, here in the 21st century. There are connections running all the way back, thousands of years.

But I think the real reason I like history is the stories. The stories of kings and queens, yes, but also the stories of the average person, the person just like me, who has lived over and over again.

What about you? What was your favourite subject at school? Let me know in the comments.
