I’m Only A Few Months Older Than You, Tinubu Tells Kukah At 70

The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, has said that he is only a few months older than the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Kukah, who celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday.

Disregarding speculations on his age, Tinubu reiterated that he is also 70 years and a few months older than the celebrant, Kukah, saying he understands the institution that he (Kukah) is building. He however said they both have a bigger responsibility in building Nigeria.

Tinubu said, “You are building an institution in the honour of your 70, I am 70 too I could still contribute. I am just months older than you are.

“But Bishop, you will help build Nigeria. The greatness of a nation is on your shoulder. It’s on my shoulder too and we must build it together. I must and I will contribute handsomely and personally to build and see to the completion of that institution.”

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has described Catholic Bishop of Sokoto diocese, Dr Hassan Mathew Kukah as a rare servant of God who works selflessly to salvage mankind.

Governor Ortom in a goodwill message to mark Bishop Kukah’s 70th birthday, praised his indomitable spirit over the years noting that “he stands firm and speaks truth to power all times no matter whose ox is gored.

“Bishop Kukah is a rare gift to humanity. He identifies with the oppressed and the marginalized. He carries the burden of the poor and defends them even at the risk of his life”.

The Governor recalled the many exploits, travails and triumphs of Bishop Kukah in his commitment to serve God and humanity, saying that in spite of all the challenges, he remained undaunted and rather spurred to do more for the common man.

Ortom noted that Bishop Kukah is a symbol of peace, unity and justices who has been in the forefront of religious tolerance and harmony in the country.

According to Ortom “Bishop Kukah deserves to be celebrated. He has given all to the society. His selfless service is unparalleled," the Governor stated.

He prayed that God in His infinite mercy strengthens Bishop Kukah with good health, peace, wisdom and courage in the service to God and humanity in the years to come.

GOV. ORTOM ORDERS MOTORCYCLES FOR DISTRICT HEADS

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state Tuesday directed his Chief of Staff to provide motorcycles to all district heads in the state to enhance movement for local errands within their respective domains

The governor also expressed displeasure over the lingering land and boundary dispute issues in some communities and promised to once again intervene in the matter to bring a lasting solution.

The governor stated this when the traditional rulers from Masev, Ihyarev and Nongov intermediate area popularly known as MINDA paid him a visit in Government House, Makurdi.

The traditional rulers are from Guma, Gwer East, Gwer West and Makurdi local government areas of the state.

Governor Ortom said the solidarity visit by the traditional rulers have rekindled confidence in him to remain ever committed to serving the people.

He thanked the royal fathers for the encouragement and pledged to never do anything without their consent, adding that with their support and prayers, the security problems confronting the state will be tackled.

The Tor Lobi, Chief Moses Anagende, in his opening remarks, stated that Governor Ortom as their son has their mandate and has continued to impress them in his governance approach.

He acknowledged that Governor Ortom has demonstrated unrelenting passion to tackle security issues in the state, pointing out that he has also ensured rural development.

The convener of Kyegh Sha Shwa (KSS) and Tor KSS and the parish priest of St. Augustine’s parish, Demekpe Very Revd Fr. Solomon Mfa Ukeyima has been officially transfer to St. Mark Quasi parish Apir as the priest in charge and also the Dean of Ikpayongu deanery.

BENUE FIRST LADY DOLES OUT 25M EMPOWERMENT TO WOMEN, YOUTHS ON 50TH BIRTHDAY

Wife of Benue State Governor, Dr. Eunice Ortom has doled out 25 million as empowerment to 58 women and youths in Guma Local Government Area.

Mrs Ortom who is the founder of Eunice Spring of Life Foundation, ESLF said the gesture is her little way of giving back to the society.

Dr. Ortom made this known Sunday, August 28th, 2022 at NKST Church, Gbajimba during a Thanksgiving Service organized by Nongov Women Development Association to celebrate her fifty year's birthday.

The First Lady who stated that the beneficiaries were selected from Nzorov, Kaambe, Saav and Abinsi council wards of the local government as the first set of beneficiaries said the cash and the kits were to support them in farming and other business ventures.

She said that the gesture, which was actively supported by some of her friends, charged the beneficiaries to utilize the funds judiciously to make it grow and make them self-reliant and empower others.

Dr. Ortom thanked her husband, Governor Samuel Ortom for the support he has given her and her pet project, the Eunice Spring of Life Foundation, ESLF to actualize the desire of uplifting the living conditions of Benue women and youths.

The Governor's wife also expressed appreciation to God for blessing her with the golden age of fifty and other good things of life, stressing that the support of Benue people through prayers has also provided a shield for her and the family.

In a brief remark, Governor Samuel Ortom thanked his wife for standing in the gap through ESLF to reach out to the people, especially women and youth in the area of education, health and economic empowerment.

While admonishing the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the empowerment kits and funds to create a positive impact in their chosen areas, Governor Ortom enjoined other youths to find something doing no matter how little.

Also speaking, the Deputy Governor, Engr. Benson Abounu acknowledged the humility of the First Lady, pointing out she is a dedicated woman and an immense supporter of the Ortom-led administration.

Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and PDP Governorship can didate, Rt. Hon. Titus Uba who was Chairman of the occasion described the celebrant as a worthy mother to all who have redefined parenting and impacted tremendously in various spheres of life.

POLICE COMMISSION UNION DECLARES INDEFINITE STRIKE

The Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission has issued a notice of indefinite strike to the management of the commission over a breach of agreement.
The union noted that the strike will commence with effect from Monday, August 29, 2022.Chairman of the Joint Service Union, PSC chapter, Mr Adoyi Adoyi, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday.
The notice is coming amidst disagreement between workers of the commission, the Chairman of the commission, Mr Musiliu Smith, and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, on which body should be responsible for recruitment, promotion, and appointment of constables and officers. He noted that the IGP and other police chiefs in connivance with the chairman of the PSC, have overruled the constitutional duty of the PSC.
Adoyi added that the IGP has allegedly taken it upon himself to carry out the functions of the PSC in flagrant disregard of the Nigeria constitution, a verdict of the Appeal Court, and the authorities of the PSC. he said, according to the constitution, the appointment, promotion, and recruitment of police officers and constables are the prerogative of the PSC, not the IGP.

EFCC Arrests 10 Internet Fraud Suspects in Abuja

Operatives of the Abuja Zonal Command of the EFCC have arrested 10 suspected internet fraudsters. The suspects were arrested on August 25, 2022, in a sting operation at various locations in Kubwa and Gwarimpa areas of Abuja for alleged involvement in cyber-fraud.

Among items recovered from them at the point of arrest are mobile phones, laptop computers and three luxury cars- a Mercedes Benz CLA 250, Mercedes Benz GLK 350 and Toyota Venza.

CHIRISTIAN CORP MEMBER CONSTRUCTS, RENOVATES ABLUTION POINTS AND TOILETS IN ZAMFARA MOSQUE.

A Christian corp member, Jeremiah Shimasaan serving in Gusau, the Zamfara State Capital has constructed an ablution point and renovated a three-unit toilet facility in a mosque.

He also constructed and installed a suggestion box at the main entrance of the Zamfara State Radio and Television Services administrative block.

The 25-year-old corp Member serving at the Zamfara State Radio and Television Services said the idea of the project is to promote religious tolerance among Nigerians.

Shimasaan, who is of Benue origin, noted that the decision was moved by his desire to cushion the stressful effects of getting clean drinking water, for toilet use (conveniences), and Ablution, especially for the Muslim ummah during prayers.

The suggestion box according to him is for collecting and collating suggestions and mails for administrative purposes.”My decision to have the project in a Mosque is to promote religious tolerance, unity, and Peaceful coexistence among people of different faith” Jeremiah said.” If all of us in this country will respect each other’s faith, love one another unconditionally, we will have the Nigeria of our dream without killing or attacking one another” he added. ”Our problem as a people is that we have little or no respect for our religion and belief, if we do, the next generation will have no reason whatsoever not to see each as brothers or sisters”

Commissioning the projects, the Permanent Secretary of Zamfara State Ministry of Environment Ahmad Liman commended the corp member and described him as a unifier.

Barrister Liman said corp members like Jerry Shimasaan with a heart of gold are very rare to find, but Zamfara state is lucky to him. He said the decision to uplift the standard of the Mosque conveniences and ablution point will surely attract the corp member Allah’s blessings, guidance, and protection at all times.

The Permanent Secretary enjoins other corp members from across the country to emulate what Shimasaan did which according to him will go a long way in promoting peace and unity among people irrespective of any differences.

On his part, the Chairman of Zamfara State Radio and Television Services Sa’idu Maishanu was elated at the project.

Maishanu described Jeremiah’s decision to have the three project sites within the premises of Zamfara State Radio as a welcome development.

Jeremiah Shimasaan according to Maishanu is one of the best, hard-working and dedicated corp members the organization have had in recent times and Zamfara State Radio and Television will not forget the gesture in a hurry. Sa’idu Maishanu prays God blesses the 25yr old corp member and wishes him success in life.

Jeremiah Shimasaan is a graduate of England and Literary Studies from the Benue State University, Makurdi. He is a Corp member of NYSC Batch C stream 1 with state code number ZM/21C/0446 and he is expected to round up his service year in September this year.

Those at the commissioning of the projects include officials of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), serving corps members, religious leaders, and representatives of the host community among others.

He wrote;

“LETTER TO BENUE STATE GOVERNMENT.

Dear sir,
I write to humbly plead with the authorities to revisit the ban decision on Okada/bikes in Sankera since it's has created serious hardship for the poor people in the axis.
As we all know, the state government made this decision some time ago when insurgency held the Sankera axis captive and killings were going on there on a regular basis. Owing to the fact that motorcycle was the major means of transportation in the area, the people have been going through a lot of stress since not everyone in the area can afford a car of their own.
This same Okada issue has affected food production since the only means of transporting products in some areas to the nearby markets is Okada.
As we appreciate the authorities for their timely intervention in arresting the situation and maintaining peace in the area, we plead with the authorities to please consider the suffering masses and revisit their stand on this Okada ban in the area.

2023: BENUE APC DEPUTY GOV'SHIP CANDIDATE SUES FOR RECONCILIATION

The Benue State Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Sam Ode, has appealed to members of the party in the state with pending court cases against the party to withdraw the suits in the interest of the party and its supporters.

He also appealed to the aggrieved members to embrace the reconciliation effort of the party that would help heal the wounds of members to enable them work together as a family.

The former Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs who made the call on Thursday when he met with stakeholders and members of the party at the APC Secretariat in Makurdi urged all members of the party in the state to show commitment to the course of the party in the state.

“That is why I am appealing to all our members who have cases in courts to withdraw them in the interest of the party and our members. I appeal that we all embrace the reconciliation effort of our party so that we can all work together as one family as we go into the 2023 elections.

“We all know that we have a battle ahead of us and it is time for us to work as a family to achieve success. On my part I have made myself available to serve, to deploy my wealth of experience and my all to help our party achieve success in the 2023 election,” he said.

The Deputy Governorship candidate also cautioned against any form of acrimony over the constitution of the party’s campaign council in the state assuring that every member would have one role or the other to play during the campaigns; “so people must not feel bad over anything because the party will carry everyone along.”

Earlier, the State Chairman of the party, Mr. Austin Agada who described the emergence of Dr. Ode as the Deputy Governorship candidate as an act of God also appealed to members who lost out in the quest for one position or the other in the party to support the reconciliatory efforts of the leadership of the party.

He said, “reconciliation is key in politics and we must do everything to support the leader of our party in his effort to reconcile aggrieved members of our party so that we will remain one united family.”

Nigeria and the United States government have reached an agreement on the return of over $23 million of the Abacha loot.

The agreement signing ceremony was held in the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami on Tuesday.

While Mr. Malami signed on behalf of the Nigerian government, the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard signed on the behalf of the U.S government.

According to Mr Malami, the fund when returned will be invested in three ongoing projects by the Federal Government, including the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna road and the 2nd Niger Bridge.

Nigeria has in the past recovered several other tranches of the Abacha loot, which are proceeds believed to have been diverted from public coffers by the military administration of General Sani Abacha in the 1990s.

In 2020, the US and Jersey also agreed to return over $308 million in confiscated funds to Nigeria.

In 2006, about $723 million in Abacha loot was returned to Nigeria from Switzerland.

Oro festival: Pastor and church members arrested for allegedly stoning traditional worshipper to d€ath in Lagos

24th August, 2022.

The pastor of Truth and The Spirit Prophetic Church in Lagos state, Mercy Okoch, 50, and nine of her church members have been arrested for allegedly stoning a 25-year-old traditional worshipper, Agboola Akeem, to d€ath during a clash on Tuesday, August 23 at about 6.30pm.

According to a police source who confirmed this to LIB, officers attached to the Oko Oba Police Division received a distress call that the church located at Number 2 Sanni Taiwo Lawal street in Oko Oba, was about to be set ablaze. The officers immediately stormed the church premises.

Preliminary investigation showed that the traditional worshippers were celebrating their Oro festival while the church members were having a church service. The traditional worshippers allegedly invaded the church premises and asked the church members to discontinue their service. Oro Festival is an annual traditional festival only celebrated by male descendants who are paternal natives to the specific locations where the particular event is taking place. During the festival, females, and non-natives are mandated to stay indoors as oral history has it that Orò must not be seen by women and non-participating people.

According to the police source, a shouting match ensued between the traditional worshippers and the church members and this degenerated into a fight. In the process, one of the traditional worshippers was stoned to d€ath. This caused a rage among the other traditional worshippers who vowed to burn down the church.

The police were able to quell the tension and evacuated the body of the deceased and deposited it in the morgue. The pastor and nine members of the church are now in police custody.

Nigerians will today, wake up to a new, revolutionary telecommunications service, known as the fifth generation, 5G network services.
The network is said to have the capability to offer Nigerians higher data speed, improved reliability and availability which gives them opportunity to connect smart devices such as home security systems among others in their homes. However, that is for the few that will have the opportunity to connect to the services.
The optics are not favourable for over 28 million Nigerians, which the Nigerian Communications Commission admitted, Tuesday, were living outside strong network coverage; and a whole lot of others who may not afford the right smartphones required to access 5G services.

POWA: IGP's WIFE VISITS HOME TOWN, PLEDGES SKILL ACQUISITION CENTER IN BENUE

She disclosed this while speaking with journalists after a courtesy visit to the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty, Agaba-Idu, John Elaigwu Odogbo, at his palace in Otukpo, Otukpo Local Government Area, LGA, of the state on Tuesday.

Hahaha Alkali Baba said since she assumed office over a year ago, she has inaugurated a skill acquisition center in Port-Harcourt, the Rivers state while work is ongoing on the one in Imo state.

Despite the successes, the POWA president said one of her greatest achievements was to revive the body which was hitherto comatose nationally.

“I have also set up a skill acquisition center in Port-Harcourt with the support of the state government. Right now you have wives of police officers benefitting from the scheme; not just them but even persons in the community in which the project is sited are benefiting from the center.

“In Imo state, I’ve done the ground breaking of another acquisition center and work has reached an advanced stage.”

She further stated that “In Kuje, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, there is no school in the barracks and I have performed the foundation stone laying ceremony and work on the school is ongoing.”

Earlier, she had hinted the Ochi’Idoma that her visit to Benue was to replicate what she has done in other states.

She said during her five-day visit to Benue, she would focus on education, health and welfare, and would seek support of the state government to intervene in the aforementioned areas.

Responding, His Royal Majesty, Ochi’Idoma Agaba-Idu, John Elaigwu Odogbo, advised the POWA President, to make truth, equity, fairness and above all the fear of God, her watch words

The royal father who advised the wife of the IG to carry her lieutenants along, told her that an opportunity has been given to her to impact her generation and all she needs to do is tow the path of truth and history would vindicate her.

The IGP’s wife also visited Owukpa, her home town, during her visit to Benue state.

Anambra State Bans Movement Of Cattle On Foot

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo has banned movement of cattle on foot in every part of Anambra State.

Soludo, who met with members of Anambra State Cattle Menace Committee at the Government House, Awka, at the weekend, said the ban was in compliance with the 2021 anti-open grazing law of the State, adding that enforcement would begin from September.

“Now that we have a law banning open grazing, the law enforcement agents have been directed to implement it.

“Though the law has been in existence since almost one year ago, cattle rearers keep parading certain areas in the State in contravention to the law,” Soludo said.

Former Governor of the State, Willie Obiano had assented to the Cattle and Other Livestock Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Bill of Anambra State in 2021, but failed to enforce the ban.

Soludo, while speaking at the meeting, said that his administration would ensure the implementation of the law by September.

He applauded members of the Anambra State Cattle Menace Committee for their devotion to duty, saying that Anambra people have largely lived in harmony with herdsmen, but the herdsmen must conduct their businesses within the ambit of extant laws.

DESIGNATE BENUE AS A MINERAL PRODUCING STATE, GOV. ORTOM TELLS FG

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has told the Federal Government to list the state as a solid mineralproducing state to enable it to benefit from the 13% derivation revenue fund. He made the call in his opening remarks at the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting in Makurdi on Wednesday last week (18th August,2022).

According to him, Benue is blessed with zinc and gold, which he said was recently discovered in large quantities in the Kwande Local Government Area. Ortom, therefore, stressed the need for “the state to be designated a nonoil producing state to also derive maximum benefits from its natural resources”.

The governor said the state government would secure a licence from the Federal Government to regulate mining activities within its territory and directed the Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals to facilitate the process of acquiring the licence. He stated that exploration of more mineral resources in the state had commenced. The governor said although Benue is without an industrial base and is a non-oil producing state, his administration is doing its best to meet its obligations to the people, pointing out that the state is paying the highest salary ranking after Lagos and Rivers states.

Ortom insisted that the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards (BSCVG) is not targeted at intimidating anyone as alleged by critics. According to him, the mandate of the security outfit is to “complement the conventional security agencies in taming insecurity in the state”. He also directed the Special Adviser on Security Matters Paul Hemba to liaise with the heads of the security agencies to enforce total compliance with the restrictions on commercial motorcycle operations. The governor encouraged the people to resist the gangsters terrorizing the state by self-defence.

He also called on the people to practice group farming to have the collective strength to ward off the killers. In pursuance of its operational mandate of nipping crimes in the bud, Operatives of the Edo State Police Command today 17/08/2022 unravelled a suspected ritual shrine. Following credible information at the Command’s disposal that some corpse were discovered in a building along Asoro slope off Ekenhua road, Uzebu quarters,Benin city. Operatives of the command immediately swung into action and mobilized to the scene. At the scene, 3 suspects, Chimaobi Okoewu ‘M’ and Oko Samuel ‘M’ both of Afikpo in Ebonyi and Gideon Sunday ‘M’ of Akwa-Ibom State were arrested while others fled. An intensive effort is ongoing to arrest the other fleeing suspects. 15 mummified male corpses, 3 mummified female corpses and 2 mummified children corpses were discovered at the scene. To this end, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of state CID to carry out a discreet investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the discovered corpses and therefore enjoins the general public to be calm as the command will continue to ensure the safety of all law-abiding citizens and those residing in Edo state.
