COLUMN | Copy, Paste, Repeat

“Learning” is actually easy. There are two options to apply: copy from your seatmate or even a classmate sitting afar from you the traditional way, or take a picture of the questionnaire and let ChatGPT or Dola analyze it and generate the answer for every item. Unfortunately, this is not a joke; it is an overview of what the majority of the youth today reiterates and considers as the true definition of gaining knowledge in exchange for high scores and achievements.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foundation this 2026 found that three out of four or 75 percent of Filipino learners use artificial intelligence (AI) for academic misconduct—especially for creative writing and for answering quizzes, tests, and quarterly examinations. While this technological advantage is no longer foreign in our education system, I clearly see it as a threat lethal for the real knowledge each student has to learn.

Let us be real here: AI has stopped serving its purpose as a constructive tool for guide ever since its utilization in education was tolerated. The same ASEAN report stated 30 percent of both high school and college students in the country have turned their original work into the artificially generated ones and have been dependent on it. Up until now, no one knows how many still hide behind certificates of academic excellence with no shame and refrain from admitting that all the “efforts” they have made so far are owned by the modern tool.

Almost none is spared from the convincing approach of the technological advancement. A research published in September 2025 in Nature suggested that people’s morals “may loosen even more, while they are more likely to cheat when they delegate tasks to an AI.” The same group of researchers further stressed that even the honest volunteers of the study changed their stance and relied on AI to solve for assigned activities after a few sets of the experiment.

Fact check: AI dumbs down critical thinking and downplays one’s level to mediocre. According to the Center for Democracy and Technology, it fosters over-reliance while undermining problem-solving abilities, the capability to explore crucial ideas, and memory retention. This simply means this tool is actually the one learning to eat up all the remaining thoughts of a person and yet leave them hanging for more.

However, many students still defend AI as numerous videos online, particularly in the social media platform “TikTok,” circulate with the caption that states some “cheat to survive.” Cheating by any means will never be valid, and if it serves as a measure for them to pass a subject, it just reeks of a bruised pride and ego that they hide the fact that they indeed need help in learning, while being loud and proud that they chase after awards and medals that were never meant for them.

What hurts more is how even in the rooms where truth, even in its most awful form, is supposed to be written, captured, and told, AI slowly conquers with dishonesty and paints journalism yellow. In the recently concluded Reconfigured Regional Schools Press Conference (RRSPC) of the Region IV-A in Rizal, a massive amount of contestants was witnessed by fellow campus journalists to use AI to work on their outputs. Believe it, these are the same students that are expected to influence other regular learners to strive with what is real, at all cost. It is, with uttermost despise, that I say it is a slap of disrespect as the province where it was conducted is named after our national hero—known for his intelligence and eye-opening works amid the Spanish colonialism time.

To every student, if the shoe fits, stop wearing it. I, as a student as well, strongly believe that AI should be dethroned with legitimate intelligence obtained by understanding lessons thoroughly. If it was meant to be a helping tool, then it must stay that way, and not as a destructive mechanism that can alter the future of today’s generation negatively.

Realistically, AI will continue to be used by countless learners, thus, the Department of Education (DepEd) must release guidelines for proper use of this tool. Either that or it should be banned in the education sector to determine which students require attention to improve their learning. Additionally, the Project Accelerating Governance and Adaptive Pedagogy through Artificial Intelligence (AGAP.AI) made by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. should be implemented sooner or later with all the best adjustments and experiences it can offer.

This is a call for learners to actually learn and let AI simply guide and not overstep. There shall be no room for triumph over copied answers, but for shame for those who take their time to study truly and fairly. And, I write it with a deep-rooted belief that a mistake shall not be repeated. Hence, if one cheats twice, it is no longer a wrongdoing—it is a choice to masquerade mediocrity with modern technology, and stoop desperately for non-existent academic validation while undermining real excellence and mastery.

Keep shining brighter, Sunshine!

SCIENCE EDITORIAL | Brainrot Makes Spoiled Brats

The ongoing widespread of “brainrot” does not only foreshadow an unsatisfactory future for Generation Alpha; this also underscores how it had easily pestered the lives of the young ones, while some elders neglect it and just let them as they unknowingly produce spoiled brats. Defined by Oxford as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state,” the modern issue smells of danger itself. It raises concerns and threats that are crucial to be fixed—now.

To be real here, the term literally refers to the rotting of the brain. As studies have suggested, this can affect the reading skills, intellectual and emotional capacities, communication, creativity, and attention span of a kid. Through a famous show, “Cocomelon,” alone, experts reveal that the extreme saturation of colors and high-pitched sounds to gather kids’ attentions can result in a delayed development.

Reality check: the elders also play a vital role in keeping children safe from the rotting. In more advanced countries, like the United States of America (USA), some parents complacently let their children watch brain rot shows, such as Skibidi Toilet and artificial intelligence-generated (AI-generated) Italian ones with prominent characters: Tralalero Tralala, Tung Tung Tung Sahur, and Bombardiro Crocodilo. One parent further emphasized their fault by claiming that this is “peace in a pocket,” until her son started showing violent reactions and tantrums when his wants were not met.

Furthermore, the kids’ situations with brainrot are not the only ones exacerbated, but the teenagers’ too. A parent of a 15-year-old who watches this kind of contents divulged how her son wrecked their appliances and household items after she took away his phone as a punishment. Basically, it is as worse as a termite that ruins the foundations of a house.

While the issue seems to be toned down in the Philippines, it is undeniable that the wealthy children have insane access to the problem. As the majority have labeled these abundant ones in gadgets, “iPad kids,” most of them are exposed to brainrot contents, based on data interpretation from health experts. Exactly a pest, this reveals how the issue does not select which country it is going to destroy—it chooses the entirety of the world itself.

It is time that we stop romanticizing “harmless” videos as shows to calm kids. If something does not sit right, it should be taken out of the room immediately—not further utilized just to escape from one’s responsibility as a parent. Destructive entertainments like this are the ones that should be destroyed in a nick of time.

Through educational and informative forums regarding this matter, both kids and parents can surely learn about the effects of brain rot and the preventive measures to seize its negative result. Meanwhile, guardians should strictly monitor children’s behavior to prevent any matters coming from unwanted contents.

With robust and comprehensive actions, we can surely stop the further exacerbation of the current situation. It is not a matter that we can easily load onto the government’s back—yet, an issue about discipline that starts within ourselves, regardless of the variety of ages. As Dr. Jose Rizal quoted: “Kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan.” We should maneuver that way forward and stop producing a weak and immature generation full of spoiled brats with rotting brains.

EDITORYAL | Lantang Gulay

‎SPAcial ✍🏻📰

‎To our very own advisers, Happy Teachers’ Day! 🥳🎂🕯️

‎Although this message comes a little later than when it is supposed to be posted, we still want you to know that every day is your day.

‎Your commitment to truth and justice led you to become our exemplary school paper advisers (SPAs), Ma’am Christ-Anne C. Arquiza and Ma’am Faith Anne B. Panganiban. You sacrificed every hour of every day to nurture our skills and to help us develop more.

‎Through campus journalism, we found our home—where our second mothers were. It is another refuge we take place to express, lead, and serve.

‎This year was filled with exceptionally fun and memorable moments from training and the recent Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC). And we could not have experienced all of those without our very special advisers by our side, who stayed throughout the whole process and never quit through it all.

‎Our victories may have seemed quiet, but we could never explain how loud our hearts would ever be to be able to achieve these. So, to our SPAs, we could not thank you more. You truly showed and used your skills in journalism to train and teach us everything we have to learn.

‎May your next Teachers’ Day be as memorable as it was today. We hope that we made a lasting impact in your hearts through the simple surprise we prepared, the 🙌🏻 in real life, the iconic “reverse walk,” and... BHIE NAMAN BHIE!

‎We could never forget about how you joked about those names and ships on random people in the press conference and meetings. But may we all be guided by God to sail larger boats carrying shining identities in the future.

‎Thank you po, mga bhie! Happy Teachers’ Day po! May God bless you!

‎Again... Happy Teachers’ Day, Madam SPAs. Happy Teachers’ Day, Madam SPAs. Tugon? 🙏🏻

‎Love, your Campus Journalists Club Family ❤️🔏
