On today's International Volunteer Day, we celebrate our incredible Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers, who save lives and uphold our shared humanity in every corner of the globe.

This day also provides an important opportunity to reflect on and honor the 32 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff who have lost their lives this year while serving others.

Wherever and whenever there is a crisis, there is a Red Cross or Red Crescent volunteer ready to support those affected.

Today and everyday let's ensure the safety and protection of humanitarian workers, including our Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers and staff, so they can continue carrying out their life-saving work.

Today, we celebrate National Trauma Teddy Day, honouring the comfort a simple teddy bear brings in times of crisis. The journey began in 1990 when an NSW ambulance Superintendent saw how a teddy soothed a child in an ambulance, sparking the creation of the Australian Red Cross Trauma Teddy. By 1991, volunteers were knitting and delivering teddies to children in need.

34 years later, over a million people—children, adults, and older people—have found comfort in Trauma Teddies. A special thank you to the 600 volunteer knitters who create 50,000 teddies annually and to Qantas for their partnership, supporting the delivery of 150,000 teddies across Australia.

Trauma Teddies are a reminder of the kindness and care that can make all the difference in tough times.
