"The way things are going, we might have a chance for a late seaside vacation in September, so there are pluses from the early harvest," Svilen Georgiev, the oenologist of the Little Star winery in South Sakar jokes. This year, winemakers in the sunbaked region are harvesting grapes much earlier than usual. And they are not the only ones - the heat and drought have changed the growing season of the vines and the production rhythm throughout the country. Southern Bulgaria, where the harvest takes place a month earlier, is the most affected, but the process in the Thracian lowlands and northern Bulgaria is also 20 days earlier than usual.

Despite a pause in investments by the state-led Fund of Funds as its active investment mandate recently concluded, the landscape for early-stage local startups remains promising with alternative funding and mentorship programs emerging. Leading the charge, local VC firms, Eleven and Launchub Ventures, have commenced the year vigorously, finalising multiple agreements already. All the while, seasoned entrepreneurs are nurturing the ecosystem.

Last year was unprecedentedly good for grain and it came after an equally strong one. But it is all but certain that the next two would be rough for the sector. The key factor driving wheat, corn, and sunflower production and trade has a name - Ukraine. Putin's invasion of the country has shuffled the grain market significantly.

Bulgarian grain growers and retailers earned higher revenues and profits in 2022, but face tough seasons ahead

Bulgaria's Ficosota Food is launching the construction of a 30 million euro factory for oven baked bread circles Bruschette Maretti, one of its landmark products. The investment comes just two years after the company, part of Ficosota Group of the Kyurkchiev brothers, built a special facility for its My Motto wafers. All production bases of the group are located in the city of Shumen, northeastern Bulgaria, and so will be the new one, Krasen Kyurkchiev, founder and co-owner of Ficosota, told the Capital Weekly.

Afew years ago, Bulgaria made significant strides when it entered the Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERM II), signaling its intention to adopt the euro by 2024. This achievement was seen as a promising development demonstrating Bulgaria's commitment to align its currency with the euro. However, since then the country has faced a political turmoil and challenges in meeting its commitments, including the necessary legislative changes, such as amendments to the Insurance Code, to facilitate euro adoption. These obstacles derailed the initial timeline.

Bulgaria's government is targeting January 1, 2025, as the date for adopting the euro. A potential stumbling block could be the price stability criterion

Finance is full of numbers and formulas, but there are also many parameters for which no golden rule exists. In this case it is management style and intuition that make it or break it. One such decision is how much debt financing a company should use.

The average debt-to-asset ratio remains near 50%, narrowing slightly

The reformist candidate for mayor of Sofia - IT entrepreneur Vassil Terziev - wins the runoff in the capital by fewer than 5,000 votes against trade unionist Vanya Grigorova. GERB loses Varna and Blagoevgrad, but wins Pleven, which will all have new mayors. There will be a change of the long-standing guard in Kyustendil and Pazardzhik, but also another mandate for the incumbents in Ruse (BSP), Veliko Tarnovo, Haskovo and Smolyan (all GERB) - these are the main takeaways of the second round of mayoral elections on November 5

Record-low turnout, a very colorful picture across the country and a vengeful Borissov
