New EU leadership, same goal of delivering for Europeans.

President Roberta Metsola (European Parliament), President Ursula von der Leyen (European Commission) and President António Costa (European Council) met the day after the new terms of both the Commission and the Council began.

On 1 December António Costa took over the role of President in the European Council, a body in which heads of EU countries define the political direction and priorities of the EU.

On the same day, von der Leyen began her second term at the helm of EU’s executive institution, after the Parliament scrutinised and approved her team.

Parliament’s five-year term began following European elections in June, after Europeans voted directly for their representatives.

EU countries set out national targets to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Emissions contribute to accelerating climate change, which is already having wide-ranging consequences for human health, the environment and economies across Europe.

This infographic shows the estimated progression of the reduction or increase of greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2005 levels. It also shows reduction targets for 2023 and 2030 for each EU country in domestic transport, buildings, agriculture, small industry, and waste.

Fighting climate change is a priority for the EU, with ambitious goals ahead: reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels) and become climate-neutral by 2050.

It has been 35 years since the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“All children's rights are interconnected, all are important and all must be respected and protected,” said Ewa Kopacz, European Parliament Coordinator on Children's Rights, to mark the occasion. “We stand by children and young people and we do not remain indifferent to situations when their rights are violated, disrespected and ignored.”

Here are some ways how the European Parliament is working to shape a better world for children 👶

2023 was one of the worst years for EU wildfires in over two decades.

🔴 Forest fires affected more than 500,000 hectares of natural lands, roughly half the size of Cyprus.

🔴 'Megafires' are becoming more common, and the 2023 🇬🇷 Alexandroupolis fire was the largest single EU wildfire on record.

🔴 The increased frequency and intensity of wildfires is an evident effect of climate change, which is driving extended fire seasons and causing fires in areas that were not usually affected.

Although 2024 saw a downturn in EU wildfires, damage remains above the 10-year average.

We must continue to work to improve wildfire resilience and response, and tackle climate change through efforts such as the ongoing .

🧸 The European Child Guarantee: Addressing poverty and social exclusion among children.
💻 Digital Safety: Ensuring a safer online environment through the Digital Services Act and Better Internet for Kids.
🧠 Mental Health Support: Prioritising children’s mental health with accessible care and early intervention.

In conflict zones, the EU works to protect children’s rights through the Guidelines on Children and Armed Conflict, focusing on safeguarding children from violence, exploitation, and disruption to their education.

The future belongs to children, and they have a right to shape it.
