🌍 2024 was the warmest year on record.

For the first time, global temperatures are likely to have exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900 average), with the last decade the hottest ever recorded.

🌡️According to the latest data from EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, these alarming milestones underline the need for climate action. Today, the European Parliament will debate how we can combat global warming and build a sustainable future.

Did you know that around 3.5 million people travel from one EU country to another every day?

The Schengen area guarantees free movement to more than 450 million people, allowing them to travel, work and live in member countries without internal border checks.

Today, Schengen has 29 members including all EU countries, except for Ireland and Cyprus, as well as 4 non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

With air traffic expected to grow, aviation, like all other transport modes, needs to play its part in delivering climate neutrality in the EU by 2050. 🌍

Our latest European Aviation Environmental Report offers recommendations to reduce aviation's impact on climate, noise, and air quality, including:

✅ Increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuels
✅ Optimising air traffic management
✅ Adopting more fuel-efficient technologies

Decoupling air traffic from environmental impact is not only crucial but also achievable. The EU will keep acting to make it happen.

Energy efficiency can play a major role in strengthening our energy independence and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

For example, switching to more energy-efficient lighting products could allow Europe to save more than the total combined electricity consumption of Lithuania, Croatia, and Luxembourg in 2023.

This is why we took measures to reduce our final energy consumption by at least 11.7% by 2030, compared to the energy consumption forecasts made in 2020.

They also prioritise energy efficiency improvements for vulnerable customers and low-income households.

The drop in EU greenhouse gas emissions between 2022 and 2023 was the biggest in decades, except for the drop seen during the pandemic in 2020.

However, EU countries must step up their efforts if they are to meet the Union's climate change targets for 2030 and 2050.

Today we honour Konrad Adenauer, born on this day in 1876, whose vision and leadership transformed Europe.

As the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Adenauer played a pivotal role in rebuilding Germany after the Second World War, fostering democracy and stability and shaping European unity.

Adenauer was a great proponent of the European Coal and Steel Community, launched with the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950, and the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community, signed in March 1957.
