KIKK 2024: the truth, and nothing but the truth 🧐

In today’s digital age and the era of the development of generative artificial intelligence (AI), the KIKK Festival this year aimed to disentangle the true from the false. From October 24 to 27, four days free of dogmatism where creatives, digital professionals and plain old techies met face to face. A common desire: to share a form of truth based on the experiential and the trustworthiness of our sensory perceptions. Read the full cover of this event by clicking on the following links 👇🏻

Is AI a cis-hetero white man? 🤔

Far from being neutral, artificial intelligence (AI) is not immune to the heteropatriachy and systems of domination. Whilst studies reveal the ubiquity of stereotypes, experts highlight the pernicious effects of AI biases and offer guidelines to maintaining a critical mind.

Whenever the influence of Western technological colonialism adulterates the traditional art of the Middle East and of North Africa, the artist Morehshin Allahyari appropriates digital tools and AI to re-figure myth and history. Her work weaves complex counter-narratives to dismantle and repair the Westernisation of this region’s visual culture.

Despite the proliferation of generative artificial intelligence models, many artists still have a restricted view of the tools on the market and their impact. Having already looked into the issues of proprietary, free and open source models, this second part breaks down an essential point of these models: the dataset. Its makeup and the nature of the data have varied repercussions on the standardisation of aesthetics, on the environmental impacts or on the questions relative to copyright.

Namur is morphing into an open-air museum during KIKK Festival. From October 24th to the 27th, roam the city in search of digital art installations 💥

KIKK IN TOWN is a digital art trail which winds its way through various iconic sites of Namur, some of which are generally closed to the general public. The trail has been devised around two major themes which question our relationship with the digital realm, as well as the impact, the opportunities and the limits of AI. Through 60 works, the young and the old alike will be able to learn and interact in a creative and ludic atmosphere in which art and the digital world encounter each other.

In the art world, residencies give artists the opportunity to be hosted by a structure and to have access to financial, technical and human resources so that research or creative work may be accomplished. The residencies – an essential link in the artistic process – specialise in the light of the resources available, the missions espoused by the sites which organise them or the territorial context.

What about residencies dedicated to digital creation in Wallonia and Brussels? What are the principal calls for residency application? How is the ecosystem structured? 🪐

From science freelance journalist for Flemish news outlets to now being his own publisher, Low-tech Magazine’s founder Kris De Decker keeps a critical eye on how tech is being covered in mass media. He launched his online magazine in 2007 to highlight the potential of past and often forgotten technologies. Since then, he has turned it into a solar-powered website. Raising awareness on the always increasing energy demand required by content consumption.

True or False: when the KIKK Festival scrutinizes the prism of generative AI.

From the outset, the KIKK Festival has offered its visitors a unique and immersive experience in which innovation and digital creativity come to life in various often surprising forms. But this year, the festival is taking a closer look at generative AI. Through its theme of ‘True or False’, it tries to untangle the real from the fake within this new means of creating.
