Antarctica Records

Antarctica Records Record label of contemporary classical music.

Genetically, the new label Antarctica may be a daughter of Evil Penguin Classic, but in actual reality it is the Penguin’s biotope and playground. Antarctica is a landing place for rare line-ups (such as the four violoncellos of the Tansman Quartett, the new label’s first-born), but also a breeding ground for unusual one-offs and experiments (such as baroque ensemble Red Herring’s exploration of b

aroque gestures in French music). Since Antarctica prefers projects to persons, it will be a safe haven for daredevils, a home to repertoire oozing from the corners and creases of music history.

🎬 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿: 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙧 𝙙𝙪 𝙫𝙤𝙮𝙖𝙜𝙚

Released earlier this year, 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗼 by Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble explores the musical territory where film composers step away from the screen and into the concert hall.

The album brings together music by Ennio Morricone, Tigran Mansurian, John Corigliano and Bernard Herrmann — composers whose musical language carries an unmistakable cinematic sensitivity, even in purely instrumental works.

🎼 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀: 𝗜𝗜𝗜 — 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼: 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗼
Bernard Herrmann had little affinity with classical abstraction, yet Hitchcock’s musical alter ego — the composer of iconic scores such as 𝘗𝘴𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘰 and 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘰 — contributes the crown jewel of this programme with 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘳 𝘥𝘶 𝘝𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘨𝘦. In this triptych, he translates his acute sense of atmosphere, colour and emotional tension into an autonomous concert form, where nostalgia, wistfulness and unease subtly alternate.
The highlighted movement unfolds with restrained lyricism and quiet intensity — suspended somewhere between memory and melancholy.

"A challenging but enormously rewarding disc," concludes Kate Wakeling in BBC Music Magazine.

The album 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 brings together four orchestral works by Annelies Van Parys.

Wakeling on the musical language: "There is something brilliantly strident about the music of Belgian composer Annelies Van Parys. A spectral composer - her musical structures are grounded in the acoustic properties of sound itself - Van Parys creates music that exudes a terrific power, both intellectually and emotionally."

🌿 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿: 𝘿𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙎𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙚 — 𝙇𝙚 𝙟𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙚 𝘿𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙮

Today, on Gabriel Fauré’s birthday, we spotlight a delicate and poetic miniature: 𝘓𝘦 𝘫𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘦 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘺 from the beloved 𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘚𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦, Op. 56. ✨

Originally written for piano four hands, the suite unfolds in a series of intimate musical scenes filled with tenderness and warm imagination. Beneath its apparent simplicity lies the refined harmonic language that makes Fauré’s music so timeless.

🎼 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀: 𝟯 — 𝗟𝗲 𝗷𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆
The highlighted movement feels like a peaceful wander through a garden: flowing melodies, soft colours and a sense of calm wonder suspended between childhood innocence and nostalgia.

A small but beautiful piece of music to celebrate Fauré. 🌿

𝐎𝐡, 𝐌𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) composed as he painted: in symbols, colours, and quiet revelations. His preludes breathe the same air as his visionary canvases, where Lithuanian folklore, mysticism, and nature fuse into a single, luminous world. In the intimate VL-series piano works, gently chromatic lines unfold like folk melodies remembered from childhood—fragments his mother once sang in the wooden house at Druskininkai. A sequence of variation cycles on songs of nature, love, life, and motherhood follows, each crafted with the simplicity of oral tradition yet shaded with an increasingly modern harmonic language.

In these 35 pieces, pianist Geert Callaert enters Čiurlionis’ dual universe of sound and vision with unforced tenderness and structural poise. His interpretations illuminate the inner axis where preludes become landscapes, variations become memories, and chromatic whispers become the painter’s brushstrokes translated into tone. This recording offers not only a rare traversal of a still-undiscovered repertoire, but also an invitation into one of the 20th century’s most singular artistic minds—fragile, searching, and incandescent.

On 𝘋 𝘖 𝘞 𝘓 𝘕 𝘋 𝘙 𝘈 𝘒 𝘌, soprano Annelies Van Gramberen () and singer-songwriter Sim Van Thienen bring together two distant musical worlds: the Renaissance melancholy of John Dowland and the intimate songwriting of Nick Drake.

Through loops, electronics, layered guitars and voice, the album unfolds as a dreamlike sound universe where centuries dissolve into one another. Ancient laments and modern fragility meet in music that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

🎼 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀: 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 — Music by John Dowland, arranged by Sim Van Thienen
In this reimagined version of Dowland’s famous song, delicate Renaissance lines intertwine with subtle electronics and atmospheric textures, creating a space where past and present seem to echo endlessly through each other.
