Last Thursday, October 21st, we celebrated our 20th anniversary with Marble Sounds and Isbells at De Roma. We could have posted some photos the day after but we didn’t want to. We just wanted to let the evening sink in, memorise it properly. Here’s a selection of photos showing the evening through the lenses of different photographers. Once again, thank you De Roma, everybody who bought our Zealartists releases over the years and everyone who came to say hello on the night!

Tomorrow we celebrate our 20th anniversary, as something was in the way in 2020. What started with the love of the 7” format and Geert asking artists he admires if we could release 2 of their tracks exclusively, has grown 21 years later into what Zealrecords stands for today: a focus on Belgian artists who have the zeal to dream big, to reach a broad and worldwide audience. Why look abroad when there is musical talent to be found on every one of the 30.528 km² of this country?

Isbells and Marble Sounds are fine examples of bands that touch the hearts of music aficionados from New York over Taipei to Antwerp. The 21st isn’t chosen lightly for a Belgian indie label with a focus on helping Belgian artists reach their dreams. We first met with Pieter in 2009 in Café Metropole in Leuven to discuss releasing the Marble Sounds debut album on Zealrecords. We met again in early 2010 in Tienen, and were completely convinced when we saw them play live for the first time. Just like Belpop expert Jan Delvaux, we were blown away by ‘Good Occasions’, a song that would feature on their debut album ‘Nice is Good’ that was released on 15 March 2010. And we were not alone: almost 8 million music lovers around the world also enjoyed ‘Good Occasions’ (https://youtu.be/r8eGJuVZ3oM) on YouTube, something we never experienced before with any of our artists.

Another milestone for us with Marble Sounds was the day in 2013 when StuBru selected ‘Leave a Light On’ as the ‘unofficial’ theme song for De Warmste Week. Suddenly all mainstream radio stations in the Benelux were playing the song and it even made it to the Ultratop’s Top 10.

Marble Sounds wants to excel not only musically, but also visually. Their music videos are always of a high standard, but videos like 'Leave a Light On' (https://youtu.be/XnQE8Z3vJ_4) and many others over the years, also tell a story. They never leave you indifferent. Remember when Halina Reijn played a mother struggling with mental health in the video for ‘Ship in the Sand’ (https://youtu.be/sCRM_w9Z5mc)?

We've also seen Marble Sounds grow as a live band: from the gig in Tienen to the packed Pukkelpop (https://youtu.be/JCNmeW_cHZw) gigs, over the concerts with Casco Phil - especially the one at Concertgebouw in Bruges (https://youtu.be/5SrCmX1N3TQ). These are lovely memories, and we got to experience them all first hand.

But for everything, there is a beginning and an end. After 11 years of working together, Marble Sounds have decided that it's now time to go out and discover new horizons, a new sound and a new label. The Record Store Day 2020 album 'Traces/Recast – Outtakes Vol 1 & 2' will be their last album on Zealrecords. The single ‘Traces’ (https://marblesounds.bandcamp.com/album/traces) is a perfect conclusion to our collaboration.

Music leaves traces, emotional traces. So we thought it appropriate to release today ‘Traces’, the song that appeared on Marble Sounds ‘Traces/Recast - Outtakes Vol 1 & 2’ Record Store Day Belgium album, as a single during the ‘Week van de Belgische muziek’ (Belgian Music Week).

The ‘Week van de Belgische muziek’, from 8 to 14 February, is a declaration of love to Belgian music in general, a way to support others in the industry. We’re sure ‘Traces’, a song of dreamy, swirling, keys supported by powerful post-rock guitars, will ring in your ears for days, clearing your doubts, bringing back your smile as so many other Marble Sounds singles did for us.
