EP Agriculture Committee to meet with Commissioners to ease burdens on farmers
On Tuesday the 19th of March, the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee will hold a series on the EU’s response to farmers’ protests erupting across Europe in recent months.
In the morning, MEPs will quiz Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski on proposed measures to support the farming community. The so-called ‘Simplification Package’ was brought forward by the Commission on the 22nd of February, and presents a range of short- to mid-term options of the European institutions to reduce administrative burden on farmers.
Later that day, the Committee will meet with Climate Action Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra. During this meeting, officials will discuss the agriculture sector’s contribution to the EU’s Climate objectives and ways that the bloc can protect farmers during the green transition.

MEPs approve AI Act
As reported by the BBC, the European Parliament has offered its final approval to the long-awaited AI act during a plenary session in Strasbourg. The Act constitutes the world’s first comprehensive set of measures to govern AI, providing companies with a clear set of requirements based on the level of risk attached to their product. Systems considered ‘high risk’ such as those used in elections, security and critical infrastructure will have to adhere to strict standards to ensure that safety and fundamental rights are not compromised by the tools. Generative AI models like ChatGPT will also be required to disclose the origin of source materials for training the AI.
In a press conference following the meeting MEP Dragos Tudorache explained that this vote marks the start of a journey towards creating a more ‘human-centric’ AI industry.

European Commission recommends opening accession talks with Bosnia
According to the Brussels Times, the European Commission has recommended that the EU begin membership negotiations with Bosnia-Herzegovina. This announcement was made by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday at a meeting of the full European Parliament in Strasbourg. Bosnia was granted candidate status in 2022 along with Ukraine and Moldova. However, the country was not deemed to have made enough progress on its targets in 2023 for the Commission to recommend beginning talks in December like the two other Eastern European candidates.
Following meetings with Bosnian officials, as well as the foreign ministers of Germany, Italy and Albania in Sarajevo last week, the Commission acknowledged that Bosnia has made significant progress, particularly in the areas of corruption and minority rights. The country’s enlargement prospects will be further discussed by EU leaders at the upcoming meeting of the European Council from the 21st to 22nd of March.

European Preparations for COP29 to begin at the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial
The EU’s preparations for the COP29 Summit, scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan in November, will kick off this week as Climate Action Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra attends the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial.
This annual meeting in the Danish capital marks the start of COP Climate Conference preparations, as climate leaders and ministers from around the world meet for the first time since the previous year’s summit. This year, more than 40 officials will attend to discuss the commitments made in Dubai in 2023, and to lay the groundwork for the COP29.
The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference is set to be a crucial summit for the EU, as it will mark the first COP for the new Parliament and Commission. This edition will be a key indicator of the future direction of the European Green Deal under the direction of a new set of policymakers.

European Parliament votes to strengthen media protections
As per Euronews, MEPs in the European Parliament have voted to approve new legislation aimed at protecting press freedoms in Europe. The European Media Freedom Act mandates that EU governments safeguard media independence and that publications disclose ownership and funding information. The bill also calls for a near complete ban on using spyware against journalists. Though the parliament had initially hoped to completely ban surveillance of reporters and their sources, certain countries pushed back, calling for exceptions to be made in cases where there is a legitimate national security risk. The Act also calls for the EU to establish a dedicated body to oversee the protection of media freedoms across the Union.
Having been approved by the European Parliament, the next now awaits a final vote in the Council. This is expected to take place at a meeting in April.

EU leaders to meet for European Council Meeting
From Thursday the 21st to Friday the 22nd, EU leaders will meet in Brussels for a European Council meeting. During this assembly, the heads of government from all 27 EU countries will discuss pressing issues such as the Wars in Ukraine and Israel, EU expansion and challenges in the agricultural sector.
One of the key items on the agenda is a vote on whether the EU should open accession talks with Bosnia-Herzegovina. European leaders will debate the Western Balkan nation’s progress towards meeting key economic and social targets, and the implications of welcoming Bosnia into the bloc.
Security and defence policy will also take centre stage during the summit. European Leaders are expected to debate the Commission’s proposed changes to the European Defence Industry Strategy and European Defence Industry Programme. This topic is anticipated to reveal fault lines between member states, as some are more willing than others to increase defence spending.

Final Compromise of the Platform Work Directive up for Vote at the Labour Ministers meeting on Monday
On Monday, a meeting of the EU labour ministers could potentially dictate the future of the Platform Work Directive. Though a trilogues deal was struck in February, the bill now faces opposition from France, which argues that the law could be too burdensome for platforms. On the 8th of March, Paris suggested a new compromise which further watered down the text. As EU ambassadors failed to come to an agreement on Friday, Monday’s Labour Ministers’ meeting could be the last chance to strike a new deal. If this does not go through, a new round of trilogues could be triggered, meaning that the directive will not be passed before the end of the legislative term.

MEPs vote in Strasbourg as the EU prepares to combat election-season disinformation
This week, MEPs from the European Parliament will travel to Strasbourg for Plenary. Ursula von der Leyen announced Humanitarian Corridor from Cyprus to Gaza
As per Euractiv, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that the EU will participate in a humanitarian aid corridor from Cyprus to Gaza. Following a meeting with the Cypriot President, and partners from the UK, USA and UAE, the EU has agreed to facilitate the delivery of food, water and other essential supplies by ship from the Port of Larnaca. This comes after the UN warned that one-quarter of Gaza residents are on the brink of famine, a crisis that is particularly impacting children.
A test-run ship is expected to depart as soon as possible from Cyprus on the 370 km route to Gaza, where it will land on a temporary pier, built by the USA. In her speech following the meeting, Ursula von der Leyen emphasised that this mission is being done under the close supervision of the United Nations and the government of Israel.
