Today, two imprisoned journalists, Andrzej Poczobut from Belarus and Mzia Amaglobeli from Georgia, receive the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

⭐ "We honour two journalists whose courage shines as a beacon for all who refuse to be silenced. Both have paid a heavy price for speaking truth to power, becoming symbols of the struggle for freedom and democracy. The Parliament stands with them, and with all those who continue to demand freedom,” said EP President Roberta Metsola.

⭐ Jafar Panahi, director of the 2026 LUX Audience Award nominee It Was Just an Accident, received the Sakharov Prize in 2012, together with Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament at the time, described them as ‘a woman and a man who have not been bowed by fear and intimidation and who have decided to put the fate of their country before their own.’

📢 Iran has sentenced Jafar Panahi, director of the 2026 LUX Audience Award nominee It Was Just an Accident, to one-year imprisonment and two-year travel ban on the grounds of "creating propaganda against the state". The sentence also prohibits Panahi from joining political and social groups.

➡️ It is not the first time he's facing prosecution by Iranian authorities - for example, in 2010, he received a 6-year jail sentence and a 20-year ban on filmmaking, and was arrested in 2022.

🎬This recent sentence was pronounced in absentia as Panahi was attending the Gotham Awards in New York, where the movie received three prizes.
