In België kent bijna niemand coöperaties, maar in het buitenland zijn ze vaak heel groot. In Italië heeft coop.italia meer dan 10% marktaandeel en in Zwitserland delen twee coöperaties bijna de volledige markt. Ook in Scandinavië leeft dit heel erg, waar drie ketens (waaronder degene op de afbeelding) een grote samenwerking hebben opgezet. In tegenstelling tot onze winkel zal je niet zo hard merken dat deze winkels coöperaties zijn, ze werken op een gelijkaardige manier als alle andere supermarkten, met dat verschil dat hun leden democratisch beslissingen maken en ze allemaal zeven waarden onderschrijven. Die waarden zijn: open en vrijwillig lidmaatschap, democratische controle door leden, de leden investeren in de coöperatie, ze zijn autonoom en onafhankelijk, ze onderwijzen hun medewerkers, ze werken met elkaar samen en ze hebben een sterke aandacht voor de gemeenschap van hun medewerkers.
