In Rangamati,
crowds often gather near the Deputy Commissioner’s residence to catch a glimpse of the submerged Chakma Royal Palace beneath Kaptai Lake.
Created by the 1960 damming of the Karnaphuli River, this lake flooded the historic palace, which emerges only when water levels drop.
A symbol of displacement, the palace remains a reminder of the thousands of homes lost, along with part of a Buddhist temple, when the lake was formed, while the new palace now stands in Rangamati town.
