*Naomi Osaka To Participate At Paris 2024*

Japan's tennis association announced Thursday that Naomi Osaka, a former world number one, has received approval to represent Japan at the upcoming Paris Olympics. The Japan Tennis Association confirmed that former US Open finalist Kei Nishikori has also been granted approval to participate.

Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, famously lit the cauldron at the delayed Tokyo Games' opening ceremony in 2021 and advanced to the third round in singles competition. Since then, she has become a mother and resumed her tennis career late last year following a 15-month maternity break.

Currently ranked 125th globally, the 26-year-old received clearance from the International Tennis Federation to compete in Paris through a specialranking provided to players returning

to the tour, as reported by the JTA.

Following her participation for Japan in the Billie Jean King Cup in Tokyo this April, Osaka expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "I would love to play" in Paris, according to the media outlet.

"Growing up watching the Olympics on TV, I felt that it was a celebration of sport," Osaka said. I thought it brought everyone together and just to be able to be an athlete there and interact with other athletes is one of the funnest things that I've ever done."

Former international Sam Sodje has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to sack Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George.

Finidi only took permanent charge of the Super Eagles in May, but his team's poor display in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin has seen supporters call for his sack.

The 2023 AFCON runners currently occupy fifth position in Group C with three points from four games.

*Sam Sodje Wants Finidi Sacked*

"The NFF has to sort themselves out. If you sack him, what are you expecting to get? Well, yes. Coaches are being judged for results. He has not got his results right now," Sodje told Brila FM.

"We aim to qualify for the World Cup. If we keep going the way we're going, we won't qualify. So, it's not about Finidi George, it's about what we want.

"So yes, sacking him might not be the worst idea, because we need to be in the World Cup."

*Blackout Looms In Kano, Jigawa, Katsina As Union Pickets KEDCO Office*

Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states may be thrown into darkness as members of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), on Thursday morning picketed the Kano Electricity and Distribution Company (KEDCO) office in Kano.

The Union had in a notice signed by SSAEAC's Deputy Secretary General, North, Dr. Baba Gana, solicited the support of its counterpart, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) to press home their demands as they picket the office.

According to Dr Gana, the union's action was as a result of the refusal of KEDCO management to approve the reviewed condition of service that was agreed between the two parties.

He explained that the management have refused to remit 79 months pension deducted from staff salary and non-remittance of 80 months Pay-As- You-Earn (PAYE), including 13th month outstanding payment for 2019, 2023 and balance of 2022.

Dr. Gana also blamed inadequate funding of regional offices for their operations and maintenance of networks, as well as unsafe working conditions due to lack of working tools for the action.

Others conditions the union demands include payment of outstanding performance appraisal salary increment for the years 2020, 2021 and 2023 and arrears for 2019 performance appraisal.

*NBA's All-time Great Jerry West Dies At Age 86*

Jerry West, who was selected to the Basketball Hall of Fame three times in a storied career as a player and executive and whose silhouette is considered to be the basis of the NBA logo, has died Wednesday morning at the age of 86, the LA Clippers announced.

West, the third player in NBA history to reach 25,000 points, was an All-Star every year of his career and led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA Finals nine times, winning one title in 1971-72.

He was also a 12-time All-NBA selection, an NBA Finals MVP as part of a losing team in 1969 and part of the NBA's 75th anniversary team.

He was "the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him," the Clippers said in announcing his death. West's wife, Karen, was by his side when he died, the team said.

After his playing career, West found title success as an NBA executive, building the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s that won five titles in that decade and overseeing the formation the Shaquille O'Neal-Kobe Bryant tandem. West stayed for just the first title in 2000 as the Lakers went on to three-peat.

He became an adviser for the Clippers starting in 2017, helping to engineer the breakup of the team's "Lob City" core that led the way to the signing of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The Clippers reached the Western Conference finals for the first time in 2021.

"I Am Saddened To Learn Of Tinubu's Unfortunate Fall Today". His Excellency Mr Peter sends his best wishes to president Tinubu over his recent fall.

"I was saddened to learn of President Tinubu's unfortunate fall today. I wish him well. We achieve nothing by glorting about an accident that could well happen to any of us.

We are all human beings and, while profoundly disagree on how to move Nigerian forward, we must remember our commonhuman frailty. Let us stay focused on theissues that will lead to a new geria.

May this moment serve as a poignant reminder of our shared humanity and the need for compassion, empathy, and unity in our pursuit of a brighter future for our great nation. -Peter Obi

*Ex-Gov Yahaya Bello To Appear In Court On Thursday*

Months after the 'hide and seek' game between him and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), immediate-past governor of Kogi state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello is expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.

All eyes are on the former governor as the anti-corruption agency waits for his arraignment to answer charges on allegations bordering on corruption.

The former governor after intrigues surrounding his attempted arrest by EFCC operatives, finally agreed to submit himself to the court at the last adjourned date.

Bello's lead counsel, Abdulwahab Mohammed gave the undertaking before Justice Emeka Nwite on May 10, shortly after the request for suspension of trial by the defendant was rejected by the court.

According to Mohammed, the former Kogi governor was not afraid of arraignment but feared for the safety of his life in the hand of the EFCC in Abuja.

He said the life of his client has been under consistent threats in Abuja, hence, his decision to go underground for safety.

*Russia, Nigeria Deny Forceful Recruitment Of Nigerian Students To Fight War In Ukraine*

The governments of Russia and Nigeria have debunked reports that Russia was coercing foreign students including Nigerians to fight for her in the ongoing war with Ukraine.

A statement issued by a Russian official who preferred anonymity on Wednesday, dismissed allegations that Russia was conscripting Nigerian and African students to fight in the war against Ukraine.

The official described the claims as "preposterous" and "ridiculous".

The report suggested that Russia was threatening to withhold visa renewals from foreign students, including Nigerians, unless they joined its military.

The report suggested that Russia was threatening to withhold visa renewals from foreign students, including Nigerians, unless they joined its military.

The official noted that the education of Nigerian students in Russia is based on a bilateral agreement between the two countries. She further clarified that Russia does not send foreign students to Ukraine or anywhere else, and that the lists of all students are agreed upon by the governments of Russia and Nigeria.

She also emphasised that students' visas are extended based on their academic performance, and that those who study poorly are expelled and sent back to Nigeria.

Electricity Tariff Hike:
Reps Deplore Labour's Absence At Public Hearing
House of Representatives has expressed displeasure over the absence of organised labour at a special public hearing on electricity tariff hike.

The lawmakers insisted that the absence of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) depicted disregard for Nigerians in preference for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.

They made their feelings known at the hearing organised by the Joint House Committee on Power, Commerce, National Planning and Economic Development and Delegated Legislation, which was held in Abuja yesterday.

According to the lawmakers, the labour unions cited the ongoing annual conference of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland, as the reason for their absence.

At the event's commencement, Hon. Olufemi Bamishele (APC, Ekiti) raised concern that the organised labour was more interested in traveling to Geneva when there were issues of urgent national importance.

He said: "This modus of Gestapo approach to address matters cannot help Nigerians. This is a platform for all stakeholders to present their sides so that justice can be done. We are talking of estimated billing, non- metering and here the unions are absent. This is very sad. They did not also submit their memo and can't find one of the senior members to come here, and this speaks volumes for their respect for constitutional authority."

Data Protection Act,
Key To Nigeria's Digital Economic
Transformation -Olatunji
The national commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has described the Data Protection Act as key to opportunities in the Nigerian digital ecosystem and a great incentive to business and investment into the country.

Olatunji said this during a media chat to mark the one year of the implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, in Abuja on Tuesday, stressing that the bill passed by the 9th Assembly and assented to by President Bola Tinubu on June 12, 2023 was a major milestone.

He said "in terms of economic value, we have an ecosystem that is worth over N10 billion now because of the law. In the area of Foreign Direct Investment, this law has positioned

Nigeria as a country that is ready for digital business because most countries and governments now partner with us."

He noted that the law has boosted opportunities in job creation, training, workshops and awareness, adding that the law has become Nigeria's global brand in capacity building in the area of data management.

He also said that because of the law Nigeria has won the right to host all Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) in Africa in May next year. This, he said, would not have been possible if Nigeria did not have this law.
"You know what that means in terms of economic value, tourism and culture, perception and FDI, a lot of investment will be coming because we will bring about 30 African countries in one room, which is a huge opportunity for an average investor and an average development partner."

12/06/2024

The secondary purpose of declaring every June 12 as Democracy Day in our country is to commemorate the history of our long journey of becoming a stable democratic country. Truth be told, there's no substitute to democracy as a form of government.

Whereas our current democratic dispensation is a quarter of a century old, it will not be out of place to pay tributes to the sacrifices made by many patriots, chiefly among them Basorun MKO Abiola and his beloved wife, Alhaja (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola, Tafida Shehu Yar’Adua and Alfred Rewane, among many others.

The historical timeline of the struggle that birthed this democracy is abundant with a series of coalitions and alliances amongst the political leaderships of that era to flush away the vestiges of military and dictatorial governance in order to return power to the people.

It is commendable that for 25 years, we have witnessed an uninterrupted season of electoral politics. It is an unprecedented epoch in our history.

It is worthy of celebration and commendation must go to the people of our great country. I must also congratulate the political class for having embraced the rectitude of nurturing a democracy, as well as the civil society. It is important that all stakeholders continue to do their bit to ensure the sustainability of our democracy.

But our democracy is not yet virile if it continually fails to deliver the promises of prosperity and liberty to the people.

However, the past nine years has thrown up a regime of extreme hardship manifested in excruciating poverty and unprecedented levels of violence and insecurity upon our people. Sadly, the ruling All Progressives Congress is to blame for bringing forth this dawn of gloom.

But the opposition political parties are even more guilty than the ruling party for the seeming lack of capacity to come together and galvanize a coalition that will retire the ruling party and articulate a plan of good governance that will earn the conviction of Nigerians says Atiku Abubakar

*Entrepreneur Urges Govt Intervention In Fashion Sector For Economic Growth*

UK-trained Nigerian fashion designer and creative director of Tesslo, Tessy Oliseh-Amaize, has called on Nigeria's Ministry of Art, Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa to urgently intervene in the Nigerian fashion industry by developing regulatory frameworks to make the industry more profitable for designers.

While the Nigerian fashion industry is often touted as the next big thing in the creative industries, it might not replicate the success of Afrobeats on the global scene, she said in the June 6 episode of "Fashion Professor," a popular Instagram vlog series.

One of the primary obstacles highlighted in the episode, delivered in Pidgin, with an English translation, is the lack of regulatory oversight in the industry.

Oliseh-Amaize pointed out that while designers invest time and resources into creating unique designs, they often face the problem of unauthorised replication by local tailors.

This phenomenon, she lamented, deprives designers of rightful earnings and undermines the industry's integrity.
Oliseh-Amaize also underscored the absence of a regulatory framework for tailors in Nigeria, contrasting it with what obtains in some sectors, such as transportation, where even motorcycles are required to have licence plates. The lapses in regulatory standards, she argued, leaves designers vulnerable to exploitation and intellectual property theft.

*JUST IN*
Emefiele: Buhari's Approval For Naira Redesign Admitted As Exhibit

Former President Muhammadu Buhari's approval of the redesign of the Nigerian currency, the naira, has been admitted as an exhibit before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja.

The approval dated October 6, 2022 from the State House and personally signed by the former President was conveyed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under Godwin Emefiele as governor to proceed with the project of redesigning and printing the currency.

The chief of staff to the ex-president was said to have transmitted the written presidential approval to the CBN.

Also tendered and admitted as exhibits are samples of the re-design currency approved by Buhari.
The documents were tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through its witness, Mr Ahmed Bello Umar, former Director of Currency Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Umar, who claimed to have authored some memos related to the project, however, revealed that Emefiele partly departed from former President Buhari's approval.

The witness said, among other things, that while the portraits in the samples endorsed by Buhari were on the right side, those printed had them on the left side.

The former director of currency operations at the CBN also claimed that the numbering styles for the currency Emefiele adopted differed from the modes that the CBN adopted under Emefiele.

Similarly, the witness said that while the approved samples have QRO, those printed did not have the features.
Under cross-examination by Mahmoud Magaji (SAN), counsel to Emefiele, the witness admitted that Buhari approved the naira redesign project.
He also admitted that Buhari on December 29, 2023 publicly launched the re-designed naira currency for the use of Nigerians as legal tender.

The EFCC had on May 15 arraigned Emefiele on a four-count charge before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the High Court of the Federal capital city.

N105K Minimum Wage Proposal Is Fake News - Presidency

The Presidency has denied viral reports that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, had submitted a proposal of N105,000 as monthly national minimum wage to President Bola Tinubu for approval.
Its has been reported that the 48-hour deadline given to Edun by Tinubu to come up with a realistic national minimum wage expires this Thursday.

The Minister was handed the directive on Tuesday when he, alongside members of the Federal Government team that reached a tentative agreement with the Organised Labour following a nationwide indefinite strike action which lasted 24 hours at the beginning of the week, visited President Tinubu to present the four- point resolution of the meeting with members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
However, earlier in the day, speculations were rife that Edun had presented a N105,000 monthly minimum wage template to President Tinubu. The Presidency swiftly described such narrative as false.

Taking to his verified X handle on Thursday evening, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the Finance Minister did not make such a proposal.

*Federal Gov't Launches First Tech-based Media Audience Measurement System*

The federal government has formally launched the Audience Measurement System for the broadcasting sector to generate accurate and reliable data of television viewers in the country.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who performed the launch on Thursday in Abuja, said the Audience Measurement System holds immense importance in ensuring that broadcasting endeavours were not only impactful but also reflective of the diverse preferences and needs of the audience.

"It is a tool that empowers us to understand and respond to the dynamic nature of our media consumers, providing valuable perception into their viewing habits, content preferences, and engagement patterns. It is therefore gratifying to note that this project, which started in 2020, has finally come to fruition," he said.

The Minister described the introduction of the system as a groundbreaking achievement that aligns with President Bola Tinubu's vision for a more prosperous and technologically advanced Nigeria.
He said the introduction of the system becomes very necessary because the current Audience Measurement still uses age-old Diary Method (pen and paper) of collecting data on TV Viewership and Radio Listenership, which does not reflect the true picture of what and how many people are watching or listening to a particular content.
"Similarly, Station Owners, Content
Producers, Artists, essentially the
entire supply ecosystem, was not
benefiting in many ways; more
important, they are neither motivated
or challenged to produce more and
better content that caters to the
'demand', as the measure of who likes
it, what they like, how much they like,
etc. This has clearly stunted the growth
of the entire Entertainment and Media
ecosystem in Nigeria," he said.
