Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, Mr. Santiago Andrés Cafiero paid a courtesy call on the Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban, this morning. At the outset, the Prime Minister profoundly recalled the immense contribution of the Father of the Nation in presenting the Bengali Nation - a sovereign and Independent country.
The Argentine Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude to the Bangladesh Government for their unwavering support to fast-track the reopening of their Embassy in Dhaka, which he believes will provide both the sides a platform to work closely. He also mentioned that “football” bridges between the two nations and two peoples and wished the bond both the countries have through football will be felt in other sectors as well.

The Prime Minister expressed her appreciation for the reopening of the Embassy within the shortest possible time and underscored the need for increased bilateral trade and commerce and called for joint-venture investment in the Economic Zones of Bangladesh that will boost bilateral trade and minimize both ways trade gap. The Prime Minister highlighted the challenges that Bangladesh is facing on food production due to land scarcity and emphasized the need to focus on "growing more food" in the current global scenario to cater to the ensuing demand domestically and beyond.
The Argentine Foreign Minister underlined the importance of cooperation in the field of education and invited investment in public universities for research. The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of education to all and noted that females are performing better in higher studies in Bangladesh.
Mr. Cafiero presented a letter of invitation addressed to the Prime Minister from the President of Argentina to pay a bilateral visit to Argentina at a mutually convenient time.
In the closing remarks, the Prime Minister and the Argentine Foreign Minister agreed to explore solutions to survive the ongoing global crises and pledged to work together to build a better world.

Led by Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship Mr. Santiago Andres Cafiero, a 34-members high level Argentine delegation is paying a two days historic debut-state level visit to Dhaka (27 February to 1 March 2023). Non-resident Ambassador of Argentina to Bangladesh, Under Secretary of Trade and Chief of Cabinet to the Argentine Foreign Minister are also accompanying the Minister, among others.
Foreign Minister, this morning, received his Argentine counterpart at the airport – a warm and elegant welcome for a promising friendship between two nations. Later, the visiting Minister led a delegation to the Brac Foundation. The purpose was to learn from the Brac development programmes and success stories focusing on women's empowerment and rural women’s financial inclusion. Both sides agreed to collaborate to share knowledge on how to bring about financial inclusion in a responsible manner to pull millions of vulnerable women in rural and urban areas of Argentina out of poverty.
Mr. Santiago had a meeting with his counterpart Foreign Minister Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen, MP, at the state guest house Jamuna, this evening. Dr. Momen expressed gratitude to the Argentine government for reopening its diplomatic mission in Dhaka.
The Foreign Minister expressed interest in wider cooperation between Bangladesh and Argentina in the areas of agriculture, agro-processing, cattle & poultry industries, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, ICT sector, heavy and light machinery and equipment. Both Foreign Ministers emphasized on the importance of enhancing close collaboration to increase bilateral trade and investment. Dr. Momem urged the Argentine Investors to invest in the Special Economic Zones taking advantage of the investment friendly environment and the incentives offered to foreign investors that will help bring down the trade deficit. He expressed hope that Argentina would support Bangladesh's initiative to sign FTA with the MERCOSUR countries during its current presidency. In response, the Argentine Foreign Minister advised to pursue Preferential Trading Arrangement (PTA) instead of FTA. He also made requests to consider lowering the existing 35% duty imposed by Argentina on RMG products and withdrawing $ 0.16/Kg anti-dumping duty on Bangladeshi Jute Bags and Sacks to have greater market access.
Prior to the meeting, Visa waiver agreement for the holders of diplomatic and official passports, Agreement on Football Cooperation, Memorandum of Understanding between Foreign Service Academies on Training Cooperation were signed. Both the Foreign Ministers signed the instruments on behalf of their respective governments. Signing of these instruments will contribute to strengthening bilateral relations between the two friendly countries including people-to-people contact.
Earlier this afternoon, the Argentine Foreign Minister inaugurated the Embassy in Dhaka. State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Md. Shahriar Alam, MP was present as the Guest of Honor. In his remarks, Mr. Alam highlighted that the reopening of the Argentine mission in Bangladesh is not just a diplomatic gesture, but it is an emotional one as well. It is a reflection of the strong bond of friendship that exists between our nations and peoples. This will open up new potentials of collaboration in all possible areas of mutual interest.

The Argentine Foreign Minister inaugurated the Embassy today after 45 years of closure. The State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Md. Shahriar Alam, MP graced the auspicious occasion as he was invited in the ceremony as the Guest of Honor. In his remarks, Hon'ble State Minister highlighted that the reopening of the Argentine mission in Bangladesh is not just a diplomatic gesture, but it is an emotional one as well. It is a reflection of the strong bond of friendship that exists between our two nations and peoples. This will open up new potentials of collaboration in all possible areas of mutual interest.
