Number of unions: 69 Number of villages: 1,6. Faridpur district was established in 18. The district was established in 1815. Faridpur is named after the eminent Sufi saint Shah Sheikh Fariduddin. The former name of this district was "Fatehabad". Although Faridpur district was established in 18 AD, at that time its name was Jalalpur and its head office was in Dhaka. 1606 AD Dhaka was divided from Jalalpur and it was named as Faridpur District and its headquarters was established at Faridpur town. Goalland, Faridpur Sadar, Madaripur and Gopalganj are the four subdivisions of Faridpur district. At present the greater Faridpur district has been transformed into the five districts of Faridpur, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Madaripur and Shariatpur. Among the ancient mosques of the area are Garoda Mosque (1013 AH), Pathrail Mosque and Dighi (1493-1519 AD), Satair Mosque (1519 AD). Other notable establishments in the area are Fatehabad Mint (1519-32 AD), Walls of Mathurapur, District Judge's Court Building (1899 AD), and Bhangamunsef Court Building (169 AD), Basudev Temple and Jagbandhu Angina. [2] Haji Shariatullah Faraji started the movement from Faridpur. An anti-blue tax movement took place here under the leadership of Dudu Miah, son of Shariatullah. The main blue factory of the district was at Mirganj in Alfadanga upazila, which was managed by AC Dunlop. It included 52 blue factories in the district. Indigo was cultivated on the banks of Gorai, Madhumati and Borshia rivers. The district town is presently situated on the banks of the river Kumar. Faridpur municipality was formed in 189. District town consists of 9 wards and 35 mahallas. Its area is 20.23 square kilometers.
