We warmly invite you to an inspiring talk titled "1971-2024: A Birth, A Nation, A Revolution," presented by Shahidul Alam, the founder of Pathshala.

This event is part of the Student Festival 2024 and the accompanying exhibition ‘৩৬’ which will commence at 5 PM on 20 December 2024.

"The presentation will unearth three phases of Bangladesh’s photographic history. The first deals with the birth of Bangladesh. Fifty-three years ago, just a camera in hand, they had gone out to bring back a fragment of living history. Today, those photographs join them in protest. Peering through the crisp pages of the newly printed history books, they remind us, “No, that wasn’t the way it was. I know. I bear witness.

The second refers to the forgotten vernacular history surrounding studio photography in Mofussil towns. The need to conserve and build on the oral histories is stark as many collections have already been damaged. A hand-painted background showcasing a flying alligator or scenic view from a distant foreign land uniquely brought together the local artist, photographer, and the community and created a particular photographic tradition, these are unique visual memories.

The third is the recent documentation of the July Revolution. An unprecedented blossoming of creativity sprung from this revolution. Graffiti, poems, songs and slogans replaced the propaganda and leering images of ruling party politicians. Years of pent up anger also led to retribution, but students, the government and complete strangers rallied round and protected the vulnerable. Students policed in the absence of police. Ordinary citizens provided shelter, food and encouragement. She left. People rejoiced.”

Join us for an insightful discussion featuring Naeem Mohaiemen in conversation with Jannatul Mawa and Munem Wasif on his book Bengal Photography’s Reality Quest.

This event is part of the Student Festival 2024 and the accompanying exhibition ‘৩৬’ which will commence at 5 PM on 22 December 2024.

𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆’𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁:
Once upon a time, we understood “social reality” photography as this— European photographers would fly into our country and check into the Sheraton Hotel; after a quick tour, they would return to their own country, having taken pictures of slums, rivers, refugees, or factories; a week later, western newspapers would print those pictures; and cries of “the country’s image is ruined” would rise. But standing in 2024, we have to acknowledge that we have won the battle for the right to our images. Today, local photographers capture the social reality of the two Bengals, following their language and methods. Organizations (Tropical, Begart, BPS, Drik, Map, Counter Photo, Chitrabani), methods (development language, international communication, training opportunities, technology development), and individuals (Golam Kasem Daddy, Sayeeda Khanam, Manjur Alam Beg, Shahidul Alam, Selim Pal) have played important roles in creating this powerful new situation. This discussion takes on the multifaceted and dialectical nature of photography in the two Bengals.

‘৩৬’

Pathshala South Asian Media Institute cordially invites you to celebrate its 26th anniversary at Drikpath Bhobon with the inauguration of a student festival titled ‘৩৬’ on 15 December 2024. Alongside the exhibition featuring a powerful curation of images and installations centered around the July Uprising of 2024, there will be a week-long series of engaging events, including panel discussions, artist talks, and much more.

We will be celebrating this remarkable day to reflect on our shared journey, honor the revolutionary spirit of free will, and bring together alumni and current students to reflect, revisit, and remember.

𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Level 8, DrikPath Bhobon, 16 Sukrabad, Panthapath, Dhaka 1207.

The exhibition is open to the public from 3 PM to 8 PM every day until 16 to 28 Dec 2024.

𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲:

This festival began with a drop—a single, small moment that stirred still waters and sparked a ripple among the students of Pathshala. From that ripple emerged a wave, one pushed by collective spirit, and a revolutionary drive to reflect, resist, and remember.

At its core, this festival stands as a tribute to the July Uprising of 2024, a tipping point in Bangladesh’s history. It is a celebration of the aura of free will that emerged when oppressive structures cracked, and when courage overshadowed fear. But it is also a moment of mourning—a solemn acknowledgment of the innocent students and civilians whose lives were sacrificed in the process. Through the images, conversations, and shared spaces of this festival, we honor their memory. What this history and bloodshed have taught us is that the problems we confront cannot be resolved within the existing framework, and so it is the framework itself that must crumble.

While the uprising remains the centerpiece of this gathering, this festival is also a celebration of 26 years of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute—a space that has nurtured countless storytellers, change makers, and visionaries. It is an effort to bridge generations, bringing together alumni and current students in a shared moment of reflection and renewal. For over two decades, Pathshala has been more than an institution; it has been a community, a movement, and a beacon for those who believe in the power of images to transform, question, and inspire.

In the spaces, both physical and emotional, we come together to celebrate, to grieve, to remember, and to hope. This is not just a festival—it is a living, breathing reminder of the power of collective will and the enduring spirit of the people who were no longer willing to be silent.
