The Union of Catholic Asian News (UCAN) is the leading independent Catholic news source in Asia. A network of journalists and editors that spans East, South and Southeast Asia, UCAN has for more than three decades aimed to provide the most accurate and up-to-date news, feature, commentary and analysis, and multimedia content on social, political and religious developments that relate or are of int

erest to the Catholic Church in Asia. UCAN, based in Hong Kong, operates a primary online website (www.ucanews.com) as well as foreign language sites in China, Indonesia, Korea and Vietnam. It also operates two sites that offer local and international English language content in India and the Philippines. The aim of our reporting, which comprises a convergent media approach that couples traditional journalistic practices with multimedia and social media, is to give shape and context to the political, social and religious trends that inform all faith communities in Asia, but in particular the Catholic community. We interpret the Catholic Church to be the body of all Catholic believers, and therefore we focus on the challenges and joys, the hardships and triumphs of ordinary people who strive to put their faith into practice in their communities by helping those less fortunate than themselves. In addition, we strive to give focus to important international developments and show how they affect the scope and mission of the Catholic Church in particular, and the people of all faith communities in general. More and more, international media has turned its attention to the strengthening of economies and the new political alliances being formed in Asia. Whether it is the burgeoning of democratic reform in Myanmar or the ongoing struggle to balance economic growth and prosperity with the protection of human rights in Cambodia and China, UCAN reporters do their best to report on these issues in a way that is accessible and relevant to the lives of engaged Catholics in Asia and abroad. For this is also a principal goal of UCAN’s reporting: to bring the lives and experiences of Asian Catholics to their brothers and sisters in the United States, Europe and elsewhere. UCAN currently operates bureaus in Bangladesh, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
